Is there an official mechanic for signaling an ejection? In baseball, it kind of looks like a forward pitch, ending in pointing out to the sky. In football, I think it's a thumb over your shoulder. I'd expect that either of these would be recognized, but I don't remember seeing a mechanic in the NFHS book. I wouldn't know about NCAA.

Here's what Grant Wahl says:

"He's the worst kind of ref, one who doesn't understand that respect is won by communicating with coaches and players, not T'ing them up at the earliest possible moment."

Here's what I say:

"Grant Wahl's the worst kind of writer, one who doesn't understand that you don't criticize and/or condemn an official for enforcing the rules when you don't know what really happened."

Oh yeah - I heard his nickname is Grant "head like a brick" Wahl. :D

Well Thought Of ...

Wow. Curtis Shaw worked 100 Division I games. He must be a really good official for conference assigners to trust his judgement enough to get that many games. Thanks for the statistics.

And those stats are meaningless. That site does not know who calls the TF, just that in a particular game a TF was called so it is added to every referee in that game regardless of who called it.

In addition, non-abusive TF's are included such as hanging on rim, delay of game etc.

A writer puts the blame where it belongs.

Yeah, he ultimately blames the coach, but he makes it sound like Shaw is the wrong kind of official to mess with. With all that being said, the coach should not ever be complaining across the court at an official. He was warned and he was given a first T. That has nothing to do with Shaw at that point or a quick trigger. That has to do with what the NCAA has asked officials to enforce. And it is clear the NCAA and Hank Nichols wants the bench decorum to be cleaned up. And the Coach's Association also claimed they wanted the same with an address they gave during the NCAA Rules Clinics. The coach got what he deserved and Shaw in no way is at fault. He did what we all were asked by the NCAA. I guess the coach thought the officials would give him a pass because it was the NCAA Tournament.

Peace

JugglingReferee Sun Mar 23, 2008 11:49pm

Not that it's the same level, but in the Ontario AAAA provincial bronze medal game in 2004 (or was it 05?), a coach came onto the court, about 12 feet and the covering official didn't have the b@lls to call the T. His response was, "I didn't see him". :D

Amongst us officials, we bring this fact up on an annual basis and laugh at him every time (he's a local official). What a joke to not call the T. What a joke to think that a quick trigger finger is employed.
