The ball is LIVE during a throw-in. In hitting the back of the backboard, I believe it IS in fact a violation, just as lodging the ball between the rim and backboard is a throw-in violation. But you, too, raise an interesting question about that. I'll have to check that one in the book just to be sure I'm on target.
