Oh man

Men's rec league. I'm designated to toss ball. I head toward circle when I see who's jumping. Both jumpers were 6 foot lots. I had to decide how high they could jump and how much more impetous than usual I needed to give the ball. (I'm 5'2")

And how to keep from getting hurt when they came down again on my head.

Rita

And did they refer to you as "Ref" or "Baby"?

Throw it as high as you want. They touch it until it comes back down.

I try to throw it as high as the rim. Then you "man up" so you can take the hit when it happens.

Seriously, I rarely ever get hit.

Peace

In 7 years I think I have only had a couple of slight brushes on the arm when throwing the toss. I do make them give me some room because I give it 1 bounce between the jumpers before going up. Being tall with long arms also helps.

From my experience the taller they are the easier and safer it is to toss.

The hardest toss is when there is a big difference in height of the jumpers.

The most dangerous jump is when you have that mis-match and the shorter player winds up to get up there...the older guys do that too, so beware those over 40 leagues.

I have been kicked before...which is why any one-hand tosser should keep the other one down south, Rita that's optional for the ladies.

The worst I have been hit was in a mens league and this guy caught me about 3 inches below my elbow, right on the not-so-funny bone. I had a burning sensation in my middle finger through my pinkie on that hand for 2 days...of course all these guys did was shoot threes all night...try marking a 3 when you have a stinger.

I'm a one-hand tosser - I've never been popped down there, but I'm definitely adding this to my toolbox and implementing it from now on.

You may have just saved me a painful start to a game down the road...

While we are sort of on the subject, make sure your whistle isn't in your mouth in case you do get hit. I've haven't kept mine in since my first game, and I'm glad because I have taken the occasional shot.

My wreck league I play for, no jump ball.

Visitors get ball first, home team gets 2 of the next 3.

In 1982 Chaminade shocked the hoops world with their upset of top-ranked Virginia. The referee for the game was my assigner the last few years in Hawaii. He's maybe 5'7". On the opening toss Ralph Sampson's knee hit him in the elbow. He said he spent the first 5-6 minutes of the game calling everything lefthanded because he could barely move his right arm.

I disagree. The hardest toss is the one between two very tall players, when your last game involved tossing between two very short players. Ugh...

I disagree with your disagreement.

Two talls gives you a chimney to throw it up, to me that is a lot easier...I don't have to judge how high to go.

One taller gives an out for the toss to go and my toss tends to go away from the taller player.

Two shorter players are tough too, because you have to figure out what height is needed...but I change up my toss for the shorties. My regular toss starts about waist high and goes straight up my body to a high release...with the shorter players I go more to the really tall ref toss and start the ball about head high and just sort of flick it up there.

On those rare occasion that I do the little kids I pretty much just drop it between them.
