Situational T

I worked a girls game tonight, 3-person. It was 17-0 before the home team scored its first points.

We're in the 3rd quarter, visiting team up by about 30. Visiting team player goes for a steal and comes up with a lot of arm on the way past. I call the foul. She turns and says loudly enough for all to hear, "that's horrible."

She pushed the right button. Whack. Her coach yanked her for almost a full quarter after that.

I need a good game.

What have you done recently that has the karma gods all upset at you?

Hang in there, the good games will come.

(If they don't, I'll deny all knowledge of this post.)

Not sure. It wasn't fun. First of all I was working with 2 guys who would rather work 2-person. Nice guys, good 2-person officials, but between them they rotated once the entire game and at least four times I rotated without them noticing and I had to cross over the floor going the other way.

Why work 3-person if you don't take advantage of ball-side officiating?

Second of all, the score was 36-14 at the half and didn't get any better.

Off tonight. Was going to work 3-person as a "jump-on" for a 2-person game, but the other guys didn't get the blessing of both schools and the commissioner, so I'm staying home. Just as well, probably.

I think I had one "good game" out of 7 tournament games last week and worked with a few crews that sound a lot like the one you worked with....it does get frustrating, but you never know when the next one will be a great one, so nothing you can do but keep plugging!

Sometimes a night off is a good thing, especially after a run of bad games. I had a couple of games that I thought would be decent during a holiday tournament, and they turned out to be out-of-control, throw-em-up-from-anywhere games, with a couple of whiny coaches and less-than-intelligent fans. (Oh, btw, did I mention the scoreboard and clock operators were volunteers, and these games were the first they've ever done? )

Then last night I had one that was essentially a snoozer - worked with two good partners, boring game, barely broke a sweat, no problems from players, coaches or fans. Now I'll have a couple of days off, and I'll be ready to start back up full throttle next week.

It will get better. (I can't guarantee when, only that it will.)

Isn't it interesting the way that goes.

Three games the other night. First two were a mess.....I don't know how the kids were coached to play defense, or not. But, no matter how many fouls we called the kids just kept hand checking and holding. Also called a lot of charges and blocks.....physical play at both F and JV levels. V takes the floor and they knew how to play. Much easier to call. Much more pleasant game. Leave on a good note.....
