Very loud music during pregame
I have noticed in VBall and BBall games. Mostly girls, pregame music is so loud that fans are covering their ears or leaving the gym. Captains' meeting require us to yell to be heard. Last game, I told them to turn it down or turn it off. Has anyone else noticed this? I was thinking of having chapter president talk to AD about this.

I tell them they can't play any music unless it's by my favorite group, shown below:

I'm with ya, Damian.
I'd say I find the warmup music too loud in about 10% of the cases. Sometimes I ask them to turn it down; I let it go if it's only going to be on for another minute. A few cases in the past decade the team has left the court, and gone back to the dressing room, to get a pep talk from the coach. I just go over and turn it down myself. |
I had it earlier in the yr. People from the crowd were dancing and having a good time. I tried to ignore it and was happy when it got close to game time and they turned it down to start intoroducing the players...... Does that make me an ole fuddy duddy?

Its too bad that the first sign of trouble these people will notice will be when its too late: when their in their 30s and experiencing hearing loss. I've never like loud noises, music or otherwise, so it hasn't been a problem for me -- unless I'm in a place where I don't have control of the volume.
Unfortunately, turning it up real loud isn't just at games, or clubs, or rock concerts. Go no farther than you local church on some Sunday mornings. |

The secret is bringing your own stereo and playing your favorite oldies above the rap, rock, etc they have playing :)

Personally, the only music that should be allowed during basketball pregame is the original basketball music: "Sweet Georgia Brown," the theme song for the Harlem Globetrotters. Having said that, my advice is just forget about it. We as officials only have to be out there for fifteen minutes. Just go with the flow.

I also wear sunglasses for the incredibly bright lights in some of these gyms... |

I agree I had 2 gyms when rap was playing and The "B" word came out and a several "F" Bombs. Coaches responsibility. I think it should be a "T" for the home team. |

70's music
Mark,
You are right, I was not referring to Disco, I was talking about the good stuff from the 70's. Just imagine teams warming up to the soft sounds of Bread " If", Neil Diamond " Sweet Caroline" , Seals and Croft " Summer Breeze" ,Terry Jacks, " seasons in the sun" and to top it off , to really get pumped Loggins and Messina " Your Momma Don't dance" Oh those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end..... |

The louder the better!
I must live in a conservative area because the pre-game music rocks up here in Northern Michigan. Never had a problem, love how the music gets the kids, crowd and even the refs ready to rock. Turn it up!

The solution is pretty evident. Find the source and slip in your Perry Como CD. If THAT doesn't get the volume turned down, then step up your game and go to the Lawrence Welk CD.
