Williams is a class act!

I'm quite sure Mark Fox thinks so whether you do or not.

Mark Fox has never coached with Roy Williams.

And Roy empties the bench as late or later than anyone else in the game. But it's college basketball, and I have no problem with it.

You read too much into my post - there was NO sarcasm there. I like Williams....and anyone else who consistantly beats DUKE! :)

"This one is different for Mark Fox, because it reaches deep into his coaching roots. When Tar Heels' coach Roy Williams was at Kansas, he had Fox looking over his shoulder for a season.
Fox was working on his master's degree at Kansas when he observed Williams' program during the 1992-93 season.
"I had such a great respect for Coach Smith. When I was a kid I knew he grew up in Kansas and had gone to KU and that he had become the greatest coach of all time," Fox said. "When I decided to get my master's I knew Coach Williams had learned everything from Coach Smith. I just felt that was the place I could really go and learn. Coach (Williams) was generous enough to let me come and learn.
"I think it really helped shape how I try to operate today. Carolina basketball and then Kansas basketball modeled after it were as great of programs as you could have so I thought that's a model I would like to recreate. It (that season) shaped me in many ways."
Fox, who had been an assistant at Washington before going to work on his degree, watched every practice and home game. Beyond that, he spent countless hours talking to Williams' assistants, who included current North Carolina assistant Joe Holladay."

Fox spent the 93-94 season with Roy Williams at Kansas. I listened to both coaches discuss it on the Tar Heel Sports Radio Network before the game.

Huh, I didn't know that. Must have been a grad asst as it wasn't on the coaching bio I looked up. Sorry about that. He was an assistant for several years under Tom Asbury at Kansas State, so I figured maybe there was some confusion.

Looks like he was there during the one-year gap on his coaching resume between Washington and Kansas State. Interesting...

It looks as if the local sportswriter got the year wrong, not surprising. He is known for mistakes. But the truth is that Fox was never a coach of any kind at Kansas. Not an asst coach, not a grad asst. He was just an observer of the program.

Fox began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach and then as a full-time assistant at the University of Washington (1991-93) where he was on the same staff as former Nevada head coach Trent Johnson. Following his two-year stint with the Huskies, Fox spent six seasons (1994-2000) as an assistant coach at Kansas State University under Tom Asbury before joining the Wolf Pack staff in August of 2000. While a member of the Wildcat coaching staff, he helped guide Kansas State to an NCAA Tournament invitation in 1996 and two appearances in the National Invitation Tournament (1998 and 1999). The Wildcats led the nation in field-goal percentage defense in 1999 and were tops in the Big 12 Conference in that category from 1996-99. Fox spent the 1993-94 season observing then Kansas head coach Roy Williams and the Jayhawk program while completing coursework on his master's degree.

He was a graduate assistant. At least that's how Fox and Williams both described it.
