Touching The Rim??

When shooting the last free throw (not an intentional or technical) is the ball required to touch the rim in order for the ball to remain in play. I thought so, and as best as I can recall all my partners have called it that way as well. When it happens I've been giving the ball to the non-shooting team for a throw in.

9-1-4 says that the free throw restrictions apply until the ball touches the rim or backboard ....

Have I been kicking this call?

You're fine. 9-1-3a doesn't go away just because the ball hit the backboard. 9-1-4 just means the players may enter the lane once the ball hits the rim or backboard. 9-1-3a means the shooter has to hit the rim or make the shot to avoid a violation.

You've been doing it right.

By the way, the requirement to hit the rim doesn't just apply to the last free throw.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm sure glad I haven't been blowing that call for a whole year.
