To Be (compensated) or Not To Be (compensated)

...that is the question (kinda catchy, huh? Yeah, I know, not really).

Anyway...got out of work today at 3:30 in the middle of a decent snow storm and arrived at the school just right around 4:45 for a 5:45 game. Right when I got to the parking lot my partner for the game called my cell and told me the visiting team cancelled, as that school's bus company wouldn't transport in the nasty weather. The host school's AD was notified at 4:30. I live a about 30 miles from the host school (took me close to an hour to get home).

What is everyone's experience in this type of situation as far as pay goes? Do you just write it off, which I'm fine with, or do you believe there should compensation, at least gas money?

IMHO, they gotta show you the money. They have to better plan for those things. If it's a freak case, them's the breaks. You could have planned something else in your life during those now wasted hours.

On our association, we call the school before noon. If the game is still on and we are not notified before arriving they must pay us.

I'd call your assigner and ask his advice before I did anything else.

This varies by conference, level, area, assignor, or association. Usually you should be paid if you were not informed of any problems and you showed up to the school. I would contact the assignor or the association and see what the protocol is. There is no one answer that fits for every situation.

Peace
