Officiating Camps In Other States

I am beginig to start consdering vaious camps for myself this summer, and I would like to know would it be a good idea to venture out to other states for exposure? I am currently a High School official from the New York City area with college aspirations and I am looking to be seen by college assigners from other states. If there are any top notch camps that are a good place to showcase my stuff in your state please feel free to pass that information along to me.

If you are looking to attend a good camp(s) for college considerations I would highly recommend John Kirk's Camp in Michigan which held in June at Central Michigan University and Mike Conlin's camp which is held at Michigan State University, and Eric Harmon's camp in Cincinatti, OH. All three of these camps are excellent camps to attend. Here are addresses to inquire more info. Good Luck!!

When disscusing this subject with other officials I usually get the same response that I am receiving now. Are most officials reluctant to sharing information regarding camps for fear that the official you are sharing this information with may out shine you at
this particular camp? If this is not true then why haven't more officials replied to this post? and to the one official who has shared information in regard to three camps thank you

Maybe this is true within associations, but I doubt that this would occur here, for the simple fact that (with a few exceptions) no one knows anyone else or has seen them work games. I claim to have timed games for five years - maybe I'm lying and I'm really an NBA official - or maybe I'm just an informed fan (other than A. Dad, they don't exist). And, of course, as some would have you believe, crew has never worked a single basketball game in his life

I think your lack of responses comes from the fact that we've kinda beaten to death the topic of camps. Scroll down a few days and I'm sure you'll find lots of info.

Scroll down and you'll find more of the same, i.e., very little information. Anyone have any comments on Patty Broderick's camp in Detroit? I think she is the one who puts it on, I know it was at Oakland University last year.

When it comes to picking out a camp. If that camp fits your goals as an official, then attend. I wouldn't attend a camp aimed at HS officials out of state. I would however attend a camp aimed at college officials out of state. Have fun and let us know how it goes. When I was in Colorado, we had several Arkansas officials show up just because a big named assignor for one of the major D1 confereces was going to be there.

As far as going out of state trying to get picked up in a college conference, you need to do some homework (which is why you started this post

). Try to find out what supervisors (or coordinators of officials, as they are starting to be called now) will be attending the camp. Then try to find out if they only hire geographically because of budget restraints.

Since you are not currently working any college ball in your area, you might want to be ready to answer this question when a supervisor at a camp asks you.....How is it that you are not already working for the "such and such conference" in your area?

The fact that you have not been picked up locally will send up a red flag to many supervisors. Have a good answer for this query.

If you are looking for an instructional camp that offers a great learning experience to any level of official, you might want to consider Don Vaden's Officiating Camp in Blacksburg, Virginia. There is an evaluator on every court, every game. Evaluators' experience range from the NBA to Division 1,2,& 3 college officials. There are usually several supervisors in attendance. But I will tell you up front, it is an instructional camp for learning... not a 'try-out' camp. I have been for the past 2 years and have learned valuable information each time. It is by far the best camp for the money (usually about $200--includes food and dorm). If you have any questions... e-mail Don Vaden.
