We have some disagreement in our group on Beckoning Subs into the game.

NFHS rules and officials manual uses the word "beckon".

How many of you that work high school:
a)Crack the whistle all the time (like NCAA)
b)Never crack the whistle under any circumstances
c)Only crack the whistle when needing to get the subs or your partners attention.

Sign me up under "c"

Ron,
I try for B, but probably that makes me a C.
I get a quiet little charge out of calling the subs in before the table buzzes.
I like the silent stop sign.

I (99.9%) use "A". I just feel more comfortable using that because then I know that my partners know what is going on and the subs usually give me a look then too. I also tell them that they are to wait till I bekon them on to the floor. "I bring you into the game, not the horn, the horn is there to let me know there is someone there that wishes to play."

C. B would be nice.

A, I just want to stay in the habit since NCAA went to it.

It did? When did that happen? I'm not being sarcastic, really. Is it the approved NCAA mechanic now to blow the whistle for every time we allow subs into the game? Where can I find documentation for this?

I thought it was odd that Bob Jenkins said A, but it makes sense if it really is the mechanic. I just never heard that it had been approved.

Slightly different subject for the NCAA guys. Do they know blow the whistle on inbounds plays? I see crews who give it a short blast on 95% of the inbound throw-ins. I just wondered if that was a new required/accepted mechanic? You see it more in NCAA on television these days too.

Actually I can only speak for NCAA Women's ball.
New this year.
Crack the whistle for all throw-ins administrated, (administered, managed, handled, what ever MARK) :) by Lead. Trail chops in time. All subs get a whistle. Well except for the parade we sometimes see.

Administrated? Is that a George Dubya word?

I am definatly a C in this one. I even instruct the table to avoid blowing the horn if at all possible. If they see us "beckoning" a sub in then I don't want a horn. I especially comment between free throws that I don't want a horn. My rational is that every time the horn blows it is a time for question. So the less it goes off the less people are questioning what is going on.

I also will give a short whistle for inbound plays where I am lead or if I am trail if we are staying on that end of the court. I have done this with the new rule that says the subs need to be at the so called X. If my whistle is blown no more subs can enter. It just seems to flow better.
