Visitors are a step slow and using their hands to play defense the entire first half. Late in the 2nd quarter, visiting coach doesn't like a holding foul that one of my partners called on a post defenders. Having just discussed how to deal with coaches at our last clinic, I confidentally step over and attempt to diffuse the situation.

Caoch: "How can that be holding?!"

Me: "Coach, #10 was behind #34 but clearly had his arm wrapped around his body.

Coach: "Yeah but look at the fouls. You called 11 on us and only 4 on them!"

Me: "Coach, please don't accuse us of cheating you."

Coach: "I'm not! I just want you even them up!"

Heavy sigh!

No, but players have tried to bribe me.

Beginning of the 2nd half, players are getting ready for the inbound, and A1 says to me (in front of everyone): "If you help us out, I'll take you out to dinner."

I hope he was kidding!

As a Matter of Fact...

I have..... and by name....It made 2 local newspapers as a direct quote from one of the Head Coaches....
And with that said... Do any of you have problems with your local news media??? There's one local paper that often seems to be critical of the officiating... But maybe it's just because of the sport's editor's limited vocabulary. The lines seemed to be the same dispite the sport he's covering.... I think our first clue came when he talked about the "Horrible Calls" that were made during a 1600 meter run last spring...
Our association's policy is just to ignore it... Letters to the editor, slashing of tires and spray painting graffitti all over his '68 Nissan Sentra have been discouraged...

These are college kids; they wouldn't be able to afford to bribe me!

The point that I was trying to make, and it's getting lost in these other scenarios, is that this an automatic T in our area. "Call it both ways!" or "The fouls are 10-2!" will always get you one. I was just curious if other areas handled it this way.

Coach: "The freakin' fouls are nine to two!!"
TH: "Wrong, coach. The foul count is ten to two."

No automatic T for either of these if it's said to me
quietly, but I HATE the foul counters. I found the best
way to defuse this is to be brutally honest:

"Coach, you've been pressing them all game and they play
a 1/2 court zone defense, what do you expect..." or
"Coach, your team is just not athletic enough to compete
and that results in the lopsided foul count..." or
"Come on coach, 3 of those fouls are on your number 12,
he's just got to adjust..."

Whenever I've used this it just stops them in their tracks.
The idea is to know why the fouls are not even & to come up
with something stronger than "Geeze coach, sometimes it
just goes that way."

BTW, I'll T either of these if it's yelled out.

Must be a rarity. Probably worth some serious money

Very good points!! I like it and I think I'll use it.

Thanks

My personal take is that I don't penalize a coach simply for being stupid. I don't T the coach who yells "3 seconds!!" all night, b/c he's just stupid. Likewise, I don't bother with the coach who says "Look at the fouls!!" for the same reason. If he curses at me while he's complaining, or if he openly challenges my objectivity, then that's a different matter. But as the opening post of the thread said, a simple "Are you calling me a cheater, Coach?" reminds him that he's being stupid and usually takes care of it.

When the coach says, "The fouls are 10 - 4" or some such, I say, "Coach, I'll make you a deal. I' won't call another foul on your team, as long as you don't commit one."

As far as being accused of cheating, the closest I've come is last weekend when the coach said, "Okay so they get to commit three fouls for every one you call". I tossed him. (See other thread, Tossed Two Coaches)

"I'll make you a deal! Quit reffin' and make the game better
for everyone!"

Cool

Taken literally, "Call it both ways" is an implication that you are favoring one team over the other, and therefore you are cheating. The howler monkeys really don't mean it that way - what they really mean is, "Call it my way", so I don't take that comment literally.

If you really want to have some fun, use this Davism. The next time a howler monkey makes a remark to the point that his team has many more fouls than the other team, reply, "They bought foul insurance, coach."

No ,but I once had a University coach say to me at a time-out that we had called 13 fouls against his team and only 4 against the other team. I simply responded to him " that's a "coaching" problem" and left it at that. That's the last time he complained all night and i have used the same one liner to the same effect ever since.
