Regarding the closely guarded Rule. Does a new five seconds count start when a player goes from holding the ball to dribbling and then back to holding, so that he actually could be closely guarded for almost 15 seconds? Or does the same count continue whether he is holding or dribbling the ball?

Under NF, Rule 9-10-1 states that a player shall not while closely guarded anywhere is his/her FRONTCOURT hold the ball for five seconds or dribble the ball for five seconds. The five second count can't start during an interrupted dribble but ends when there is an interrupted dribble. Therefore, under the rule, a player can hold for four seconds, dribble for four seconds, and then hold again for four seconds for a total of twelve seconds while closely guarded.

NCAA Men: Closely guarded violations occur when a closely guarded player anywhere in his frontcourt holds or dribbles the ball for five seconds. The count shall be terminated during an interrupted dribble.

NCAA Women: Closely guarded violations occur when a player in control of the ball, but not dribbling, is closely guarded by an opponent in a guarding stance within six feet and the player in control holds the ball for more than five seconds.

Yes, a new count does start as you described and he could concievably control the ball in frontcourt for a total of almost 15 seconds.

And for women (NCAA), the closely guarded count can occur ANYWHERE on the court, including in the backcourt (since there is no 10-second count).
