I was the R in a HS boys JV game. Coach comes to me at 4 minute mark and says I want to add a player to the scorebook. I said it will cost you a T and he said do what you need to do. I then asked him why he wanted to add the name and he said the kid had been injured and his name was not recorded in the prior game and the scorers copied names to this nights scoresheets off of scoresheets from the last game. I then offered to discuss it with the opposing coach to see if he had a problem with allowing the addition without penalty. I explained to offended coach that by rule he was entitled to the Free throws to start the game and possesion if he wanted enforcement. We all talked it over and offended coach was very gracious and just said that the offending coach "owed him one". So we add the name and no "T".
In retrospect I think I screwed up because I put the offended coach on the spot and pretty much asked him to make the call that I should have made.
What is your opinion?

i have had a similar situation. it was in a blowout(the game was decided) and the losing team was putting in subs that were not listed. i went to the winning coach and explained the situation, he asked do we have to administer? i said we do not have to, i just wanted to get your input on the situation.
this is a situation that showed me the coach was adept to good sportsmanship. he did not have to be, but he was.
on the contrary i would administer the T in a college game if it was prior to the start(4 min till)
in a high school game, if i knew the coach, i would confer with him. if i didnt know the coach or knew his attitude was rotten then i would administer the T.

Wait, is that what I'm missing? The Hairy Eyeball? I've stared at pants....puked on shoes....Hell, I've even invited the old guys over for a nueter party.....now I just need to grow hair in my EYE?!? When was that covered in class? Will they cover that at my next rules meeting?

Larks...maybe I'll put some of that chia pet stuff in my eyebrow and see if that works.

Larks-

The Hairy Eyeball is my dad's term for "The Parent Look" It's the look that a parent gives to a kid who is out of reach, but doing something punishable. It says, "Kid, if you stop now, we'll both forget this happened, but keep going and... BAM!!" I have had a good deal of parenting experinece, and my hairy eyeball is well developed. I find it can work particularly well on certain coaches, especially when they know they are on thin ice. I think that's enough metaphors for one post, so I'll stop.

BktBallRef, If the coach had produced a roster or list with that player on it, what would you have done different?
