hey guys, a quick question... i have a big game coming up and i have been told, and kind of knew, that there will be some big names there, people that do watch and notice good officiating. what would you be most concerned about when heading into this game? Thanks

paulis Sat Dec 15, 2001 10:43pm

Proper mechanics....game management....professionalism. Did I mention proper mechanics? Good luck!

Define "big names." Do you mean like Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfernschpledenschlittcrasscrenbonfriediggerdingl edangledonglebursteinvonknackerthrasherapplebanger horowitzicolensicgranderknottyspelltinklegrandlich grumbelmeyerspellerwasserkurstlichhimbleeisenbahnw agengutenabenabendbitteeinnurnburgebratwurstlegers purtenmitzweimacheluberhundsfutgumberaberschoenend ankerkalbsfleischmittleraucher Von Hauptkopt of Ulm?

naw, i wish they were that big:), they are just people that book games, or have pull on booking games, and people who book the all day, 9-5 tourneys. i'm looking foreward to this game, i am getting a friend to camcorder my parnter and myself, so we can watch it and see what we need to work on, which for me, is quite a bit!:) i had a perochical (sp?) school 8th grade boys game last night, it was awsome! It was better than ANY jv guys game i have ever worked, it was very very good! thought i'd add that because i was so impressed by the teams, and the coach of team b was barking the whole game, and then afterward he tells us how good of a job we did, i still can't figure that one out... he took my business card, which brings up another topic, do any of you give your business cards to coaches/ad's after games that you thought went well, or is that not right?

some advice

In some parts of the country, sub varsity games
are solicited by officials. There definitely use
your business card.
Most places have assignors who do all the work.
There probably best to just continue to work hard.
Should a coach or AD ask you for a card, give him one,
but don't be the aggressor.
Regarding your observation by big names;
#1 arrive early (polished shoes, clean shirt)
#2 cooperate with your partner
#3 demonstrate sharp signals
#4 always work for the best angle
#5 allow the game to flow, but call the obvious
#6 be approachable, but don't take too much crap
#7 look like you enjoy being there (be relaxed-smile)
#8 maintain control of the game
#9 be fair and consistent
#10 exude confidence with voice and body language
Good luck, you will only have one chance
to make a first impression.

Thanks, that is great advice. in my area, officials do do most of the booking, our associations do squat for us. and i'll be wearing polished shoes (converse all star patent leather):)! the thing i'm gonna wk on the most is ballwatching, i developed the habbit in summer league and have been trying to break it all season...

Treat them the same if you can.

Try to officiate all games the same. Because when you do, you show them your best no matter what is going on with the game. Many times you will never realize who is in the stands until the game is over or until you have already officiated most of the game. Treat every game as a big game and treat every person as a potential big name. You might just move up or get recommended by how you handled that JH game on an off night.

Peace

very good advice

You know I have to agree with you.
You've given this guy some good advice!
You never know who is watching and you
never know with whom you are talking.
I wonder why some people don't take this same
advice when dealing with new posters on this board.
You just never know, do you?

Doug Sun Dec 16, 2001 05:44pm

i agree also, that is great advice, thanx. that last point is something to to think about. someone on this forum could be a commissioner or someone important checking us out, for games, or looking for new reffs. ya never know...

The only problem with that, there are not too many people that are using their real identity. So if an assignment chairman is on this board, he might not even be dealing with a person with the real identity.

Doug Mon Dec 17, 2001 07:45am

yup, agreed, just something to think about.:)

If only you knew...

Yes, Many people assume psuedo-identities here.

Bottom Line: Judge the content, because perception is reality. Or is it?

Right, DOUG!:D

WHA?????

People here are not using their real names? And to think that I had $10,000 for a Mark Padgett. Oh well, I guess that I will have to search elsewhere to deliver it. ;)

Doug Mon Dec 17, 2001 05:36pm

right willie:) but who would ever do that?:)
