Off-Topic: NCAA Volleyball Final 4

I've posted this on the extremely quiet volleyball forum, but I know some of you work both sports, so I'm posting over here too:

Anyone know why there is a third referee sitting behind the "up" official during the NCAA final four? Doesn't seem like he's doing anything productive-or is that the only spot they have for the guy not working the match???

Wow, it must be really slow on the volleyball forum for Matt to wander over here.

What are the odds the name Diebler will come up before the actual answer does?

Are you saying he sits up high, at the same level as the up official? Maybe, if (s)he is the alternate, that gives him/her the same look during the match so there isn't a big transition if they need to step in?

Geeze, guys, show a little respect. I too am an avid volleyball watcher.

Topless beach volleyball is my life!

Maybe the third official is there to smooth the sand after the ladies fall. Wouldn't want one of the l'il honeys to step in a hole and twist an ankle or sumthin'. Has he got a rake?

Did you know that the most common injury among the better-endowed topless beach volleyball players is an eye injury? Maybe the third official is actually an oculist? Or a pervert posing as one?

I wonder if Nevada thinks that the official that sits in a chair and points to an end every now and then should retire at 50 too?

My "GUESS" is that they are tracking the movements of the Libero for each team. Volleyball limits the number of substituions. The Libero can go in/out as often as they like and without notifying the official as long as the player they come in for comes back in for them. The Libero plays in the back row....as a defensive specialist. It can get pretty confusing so someone has to track the ins/outs and for who.

Maybe Jurassic isn't lying when he says that he predates the invention of basketball.

It's possible, but I'm pretty sure he wrote that post from his hand-basket.

BTW - is there a FIVA? If so, how could we make fun of that acronym? Suggestions please.

Actually, the original post on the volleyball forum was about the NCAA men's tournament.
