I saw the original Rat Pack a few times. Then, in 1970, I lived there for a while before coming to Portland. I've been back numerous times, mostly for trade shows.

It's really a shame what's happened to that town.
$1.99 buffets? Shows for $5.00? I suppose you had to walk uphill, both ways to get there back then too.

OK enough already. Vegas does have crime, but not like what this article described.
It is not always unsafe to walk the strip.
Living in Vegas is not the same as visiting Vegas. A lot of locals do not go to the strip unless they work on the strip or have someone in town visiting. Locals go to locals' casinos like Texas Station, Boulder Station, Fiesta and Sam's Town.
Mark, you don't think the mob still runs Vegas? Seriously? That's funny.

You guys want some fear? Try DC/Maryland - I was there three weeks ago and they seemed to be killing people for sport.

This happens in Vegas (or did when I was there, '93-98) whenever you have a big sports event in town. A lot, and I mean a lot, of gangbangers come to town from California, Arizona, and New Mexico. Tupac was killed the weekend of a big fight by some LA bangers. Even on a normal weekend the gang population rises. A lot of the gangs in Vegas are off-shoots of gangs in Cali. So when you have a big fight or an event like the All-Star game you gonna find that crime rate goes up for those few days.

But it's not just gangs. A lot of criminals flock to Vegas to find marks. Plus you have a very transient population in Vegas. Gaming/Hotel work and construction are the top industries in town. A lot of folks come to Vegas looking for quick work.

So it doesn't make for a very stable population base.

I remember seeing Carol Burnett open for the Smothers Brothers at the Dunes. The boys were doing some skit in which Tommy did something stupid (now there's a surprise) because "everyone else did it." Dickie asked him if he would jump off a bridge just because everyone else did it and Tommy replied, "Huh, not again".

I also remember the El Cortez hotel on Fremont St. downtown serving steak and eggs from midnight to 6am for 99 cents.

My grandfather worked in casinos at the Stardust, the Sands and the Sahara. Back in Chicago, he worked for Al Capone in the 20s (I am not kidding).

Yep, except now they are doing it with Metro buses. 4 pedestrians killed this month.
