Same pay.......more benefits!

Looks like the state of Iowa is providing better benefits for us officials.

More states need to make their laws stricter.

I'm sitting here laughing right now. I actually had to make the road trip up to where that television station is located on Friday when that story evidently ran. Two visiting fans were removed from the gym partially at my behest. They were doing, "nuts and bolts, we got screwed". I told one of the game managment people that I didn't want to hear that chant again. To me that doesn't belong in a high school contest. He went and talked to the section that was doing it and I saw him walking two young men out of the gym. I don't know why they were booted, I think they might have had something to say to the administrator.

What good is it to make stiffer penalties when the liberal judiciary won't enforce them.

There was a push a few years ago to make assaulting a game official equivalent to assault on a peace officer. Nothing ever came of it though.

A few years ago, we passed a law here in Oregon that makes assaulting a sports official during the performance of their duties a class A misdemeanor. Having it elevated to this level means District Attorneys will prosecute and it can include both a heavy fine and possibly jail time.

I was one of many who testified in committee hearings in favor of the bill. It was also endorsed by NASO.

To my knowledge, no one has been charged with it yet.

BTW - I carry a copy of the statute in my ref bag.

I will have to check again, I went through this when one of my softball umpires was beat up.

I think Indiana did pass the law that changed it to, if there is physical violence it raises the offense to a class C felony charge.

I'm for the fine being paid directly to the official.

Yup, it doesn't belong in a high school gym. The conferences I work for see that kind of chant as unsportsmanlike. I agree. I'll listen to that chant at my college games though.

They will enforce an injunction though allowing someone to play who was just suspended for being thrown out of a game and knocking an official down.

See Mayo, OJ.....
