A bad situation for coaches.
Guys I hope I can explain this so everyone will understand
1) Floyd County High School, Single A school. 2) Girls V coach (Alan use to coach both VG and VB before seasons seperated.) 3)Alan has a son (Travis) that played for him when he was in high school and now is his assistance on the VG team. 4)The VB coach Brian also played for Alan in high school. He is also a former assistance to Alan 5)Travis has a 3 year old son(Joshua). 6)Brian has a 4) year old son (Chance). Both of the boys(3-4yr old) have been diagnosed with a very rare type of tumors on there brains less the 2 weeks apart in Dec. The doctors was able to remove 90-95% of Joshua's tumor. The doctors was able to remove 50% of the larger of 2 of Chances tumors. Both kids will be at Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center in N.C for radition treatments. |
I don't fully understand the relationships between all the people involved, but cancer is always a scary story and made sadder by the timing around the holidays. I wish the best for the two kids.
|
UPDATE: Joshua
Earlier this evening Joshua Cantrell went to be with the Lord. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cantrell families. Joshua's dad, Travis is the assistant coach with his father Alan as the head coach for the Floyd County girls varsity basketball team. They are currently heavily favored for the Virginia State Group A Championship. The other little boy with cancer is Head Coach for the VB team ,Brian Harmon's son. He seems to be doing better and even got to come home for the weekend but has returned to Duke Medical Center. You can find more information at www.samefight.org

SWVAREF daughter
My daughter who is 12 has had problems with her right knee for about 2 months. She does competitive gymnastics and she practices for 5 days a week 12 months out of the year. She has been doing therapy for about 2 weeks , well last week on Tuesday she had an accident at school. We took her back to her doctor, they did several test, Friday the doctor scheduled an MRI, that showed gray areas on her femur. The doctor is telling us she has a tumor on her knee ( instead of where the swelling is) and where the gray area on her femur is possibly some type of cancer. Monday she is scheduled to have a CT Scan on her upper body to make sure there is no cancer there.Tuesday she is scheduled to have a Bone Denisity test, this is where the doctors withdraw her blood out, put radition in then inject both back into her body then scan her and see if she has anymore of those gray areas on any other bones.
Guys this of course is going to be a tough time for us her sister who is 9 also knows what is going on. If things are as bad as they are thinking, the doctors are talking radition chemo and possibly death. We will know more tomorrow and Tuesday. I am asking you guys to pray for my little girl and get as many people to put her on there prayer chain, right know that is all we have. Her name is Kassidy and the problem is on her right knee. Thank you guys I know this board is visited by alot of belivers and we officials as competive as we are about our jobs, we still are family. Feel free to give out my Email if you think it is necessary [email protected]. Thanks for listening and your prayers ,we will never see each other or meet but for Kassidy to know that people are praying for her will give her hope . Respond to this so she can read it if you like or send an e-mail and she can read it to. Thanks again!! |
Very sorry to hear that. Your whole family will be in my thoughts.
|
While I know its easy for me to say this, the first thing to keep in mind is to not panic. Chances are pretty decent its benign. Even if malignant, sounds like a form of primary bone cancer, with very high survival rates -- especially among children that age. Cancer treatment is getting better each day.
With that said, however, prayers will go out from here. |
Will do!!!
Kassidy will be in our prayers!;)
|
SWVAREF -- Of course I'll be praying for you, Kassidy and your whole family. I also want to encourage you to pray not only for a miracle healing, but also for comfort and peace through all the things that could happen if a miracle isn't forthcoming. We know that God doesn't always give miraculous healing, but He is always, always glad to be there to listen, hold, comfort, and carry.
I've got some experience dealing with medical issues in my children, as well as other difficult life circumstances, and God has been with me through it all. If you'd like some theological or spiritual advice and encouragement, I hope you'll PM me, and I'll be glad to share what I've learned. |
Even I'll send one up for little Kasskidy, before Bob can log in and tell us all we can't discuss prayer on this site.
|
She will remain in our prayers as long as necessary and I pray for you to have strength through this time.
|
Kassidy and your enire family will be in my prayers also!
|
SWVAREF - Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Kassidy, and your entire family.
As a father of several athletes myself who have weathered their share of serious injuries and illness; keep thinking positive thoughts, listen to your doctors, and never letem get you down!. You and Kassidy can beat it!! Continued Best wishes, Rob |
Prayers for wisdom, that the doctors accurately diagnose the problem and a prayer for you and your wife that if there are alternative treatments [don't assume Modern Medicine is the only alternative], then you will be made aware of them. This is a good time for research on your part - you might go to a local medical school library, explain your situation to the librarian and ask for guidance about how you can research your daughter's symptoms and possible treatments - you could surprise yourself by what you are able to learn and will feel less like a victim along for the ride.
In the meantime, help Kassidy develop the non-athletic gifts that God has given her! I spent two years of HS on crutches and in a brace due to a degenerative bone disease and it paid off in poetry, art and piano!! She will have plenty of "waiting time" in the coming months for her to trace through mazes, working logic problems, compose some music of her own... lots of possibilities and she no doubt will discover a talent she wishes to pursue with as much dedication as she applied to gymnastics. God has a Plan. |
As the father of two teenage daughters my heart breaks for you and your family. Please know that I will pray for you and your family. For wisdom for the doctors as well as you and your wife. For strength for the entire family, especially Kassidy - and that God will prove Himself real to your family at this time.
Kassidy, we all care about kids of all ages or we wouldn't be referees - that having been said, we are ALL pulling for you and wish you the best! |
I just said a prayer for Kassidy and your entire family! I will do so everyday and hope you have good news to share with us soon. My wife had cancer almost 6 years ago and is doing well now so I know the stress of waiting. We have girls who are 13 and 10 and it is amazing how mature they became during the years we have delt with cancer. Good things come out of everything that occurs in our life and the closeness and strength of your family will be the first thing you will notice during this tough time.
Our neighbor girl had the same thing you are describing and it turned up to be benign. I will be praying for the same for Kassidy. God bless you during this difficult time! |
My prayers a definitely with your daughter, you and your whole family.
|
Prayers for your whole family. Please keep us updated.

Mine thoughts and prayers as well as my families will be with you and your family throug out.

We had the CT scan done today, A bone scan, lots of bloodwork. She did not get to drink the liguid that would show anything in her stomach kidneys etc, insurance would not approve just yet. The doctors are sending us to a specialist in Richmond VA Thursday to do a biospay?? of what they think could be a tumor on her knee.We will have results from todays test Tuesday.
Guys thanks for the words of encourgment, Kass liked that and the e-mails we will respond back to each one soon. Thanks again and Ill update soon. |
I've been away from the board for a while, and so I'm just reading this thread tonight. I too have a 12 year old daughter, named Kassandra. I can only imagine what you must be going through right now. You, your daughter, and the rest of your family will be in my prayers as well.
Our family has had its share of illness and hospitalizations. No cancer, fortunately, but some just as life-threatening. Prayer and a little faith can work miracles, not just for the one who is ill, but for the others who are trying to cope. Let us know when you know more, please. |
May God bless you, your daughter, and all your family. May he grant you the strength to pass through this ordeal.

As someone who lost a nephew recently to end stage Hodgkins Lymphoma I know how scary things like this can be. I have also been active on the fund raising front for the St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis for 20+ years and have seen first hand how the advances that are made everyday are allowing more and more positive outcomes.... |

Well guys my familys life changed forever when the doctor came in after Kassidys surgery and told us in 7 words." Kassidy has cancer on her right knee". The tumor came back possitive and we face 3 months of chemo. As of right now the chemo will start next week, go on for 3 months, then they will do another test to see if the treatments are working. You guys know things change in this situation instantly. Kass told me today she is more worried about losing her hair than having cancer.I know we have a long road to travel, I want to thank you for prayers and letting me come on this board and express this to you guys. Talk to you soon
|
If it is alright with you, I will add Kassidy's name to our prayer list at church. Our prayers are with you.
|
You life will be different; hopefully it won't be as bad as it seems.
Keep us updated - we'll keep your family in our prayers. |
I know I joke around a lot, but certainly not in this case. Add my prayers for Kassidy to your list. :)

We have received lots of e-mails from you guys Please send them to Kassidy she likes the words thanks to those who have emailed us please keep them coming toward her and also for the family Her cancer is osteosarcoma. As of right now she is taking pain med every 2 hours.Iwill update soon
|
Healing prayers headed your way. I looked osteosarcoma up on the internet and I did like this statement: "But with the proper diagnosis and treatment, most kids with osteosarcoma do recover."
Hang in there. |
In September of 2003, my 26 year old brother was diagnosed with a sarcoma in his rib cage. The surgery was a very difficult ordeal because it was thoracic and was so close to the heart and lungs. It was a very long week for us (and his wife, who was 7 months pregnant at the time). He did not need chemo, however, since his cancer had been fully removed during the first surgery (the 2nd surgery was really a cautionary sweep meant to ensure full removal) and the 2nd biopsy showed no signs of cancer.
Three and a half years later; nothing. Other than residual effects of the surgery itself, he is as healthy as can be. |
I forgot to add, if she's concerned about her hair, there are some good wigs out there.
http://thegbu.blogspot.com/mullets.jpg |
No Hair
Here in Connecticut we've had several cases where an entire class of students shaved their heads while one of their classmates was going through chemotherapy. I hope your daughter's teacher, principal, or PTO/PTA president is watching this thread. God bless.
|
Thanks Kassidy thought that would be pretty funny if her principal would shave his head. Knowing him he would wait until the last day of school

Just a couple things she might think about doing - (if she hasn't already): 1. Keeping a personal journal of her fight might be something to think about. 2. Get her a separate notebook that she can use to write down things she wants to ask her doctors when she thinks of them - it's a lot easier than trying to remember them later on. 3. There are boards/support groups on the web where kids fighting cancer & other serious diseases can share their experiences with each other. If she hasn't already found them, let me know & I'll email you some url's to get started with. The chemo's not going to be fun, but tell her to hang in there - a lot of people are pulling for her. I made sure that your entire family is being specifically remembered in our book of intentions for the Triduum services this week (I'm doing music for all 5 - gonna be a long weekend!). I'm sure many others are making sure you're remembered in their prayers as well. Keep us informed how it's going........ Pax Vobiscum |
Kassidy, Keep this in mind. Prayers and the power of your mind will bring you through this. Have the faith. When you think of positive thoughts it's wild how your brain will send healing powers to the area that has the cancer. Trust me I've seen it happen. So see your self healed and it will happen soon. You will be added to my prayers. Be strong and keep the faith.

update.
Hey guys just a quick update as you can tell its late .I just got home with Kassidys little sister so she can go to school tomorrow. We started off this morning pretty early. Kassidys port-a-cath surgery went very well this morning. She was needed extra fluids before she could take her 1st treatment of chemo in which she got that tonight at 9pm. We left the hospital at about 10:00. She was not sick as of then. We meet with her doctor taday and found out she has to take 40 weeks of treatments (up into Christmas). If everything goes as planned and the chemo works, she will have another CT and MRI at about the 11 week mark where the will see if the chemo is killing the cells. If so they are planning to replace her right femur with a metal rod (that is where the main tumor is located)and continue. Some of the treatments will require over night stays and when the use the more stronger Meds she will be there for 6 days or more. You guys are right this will be a hard road for us. We as a family will have to doctor her while she is at home. No vacations, no going out of town anytime. We have to have someone with her 24-7. Which is great because we know she will still be with us.THANKS for listening and I'll update soon

SWVAREF...
I just read this thread and am sorry I have skipped over it. I was saddened to see that another person has joined my fraternity as a caregiver. Just before the season began, my wife and mother of our three young children was diagnosed with stage IV (inoperable) Melanoma. We have been battling this now for several months. In fact, I am writing this post from the chair next to my wife's hospital bed. She is scheduled to have one of the tumors removed today to do a complete biopsy to acertain the efficacy of the trial agent that was administered to her 2 months ago. She went through standard chemotherapy, but it did not produce the required results, so we are forced to participate in clinical trials. I don't want to bore all you or the rest of the community out there with all the details or our story, but I want to let you know that I am travelling the road with you and am more than willing to share the lessons I have learned over the past 6 months as you navigate the medical, psychological and pysiological path the cancer creates. There is also a lot you can do to get involved and help fight cancer as a caregiver. (Make sure that you and your wife look after your own needs as well to maintain proper health, otherwise you wont be as effective for your daughter). One person mentioined starting a journal and I highly recommend that. My wife and I have actually started a Blog to chronicle our journey. This is great because it allows us to document our journey, keep family and friends abreast of the latest news, and a forum for them to leave comments for us. Much like your daughter enjoys reading the posts and emails that this community has sent you, we enjoy getting the feedback from our supporters out there on our blog. If you have any questions at all, I would LOVE to help you. Send me an IM or reach out to me on our blog as I check it several times a day. (BTW... any and all readers are welcome to visit our blog... "lyonsfamily.org"). I have to run now, as they should be coming any minute to take my wife to the OR. God Bless you and may He hold you and your family firmly in His hands. (BTW... this is obvioulsy why I was notably absent from the forum this season). |

I have said a prayer for Kassidy and your family and I will continue to do so. I looked up your church (glorydome.org?) looks like a cool place and your beliefs appear to be like mine.
A couple thoughts have come into my mind, please remember that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father above, and by His stripes you were healed. God Bless |
Daughter
My heart and Prayers go out to you,
I have 2 daughters and while reading this it struck very near to my heart. So please hang in there. I will begin a prayer chain tonight when I go to Church. |
Update 1 week after chemo
Kass is feeling better now. She is able to keep her foods and medicines on her stomach. She is very weak and is not sleeping as much as she was the last 4 days. We have to go back to the DR Thur to have her blood counts checked. If she doesnt start running a fever or any thing else unusual we will not have to go back until the 25th of this month for more treatments. The DR said she will not be as sick this time but she will begin losing her hair.
Several months ago (Jan 10) I was the one who started the thread "A bad situation for coaches" I dont know how to attach that thread to mine (someone help me please). But if you go back to that thread, we live in the same county as they do . My wife played for The VG coach in HS. I have officiated for both of those coaches. Now my girl is fighting cancer to. You can read more about those 2 little boys at samefight.org Thanks for your words of encourgment and prayers . I have not responded to the emails from you guys, I have printed them off for Kassiday to read in the near future.SHE WILL enjoy readind them. Update again soon...... |

For Bball_Junkie and swvaref, you and your families are in our prayers.
We just lost a friend last week who's melanoma spread to the brain. My wife lost her sister to breast cancer and lymphoma 4 years ago. Her mother's stage II non-small cell lung cancer from last summer has returned and spread to her bones, which means it's advanced to stage IV. There are presently no clinic trials available within traveling distance. She is presently taking a daily chemotherapy pill as oppsed to the typical chemo treatments and receiving treatment for the bone cancer. We're trying to keep her comfortable but there's not much quality of life right now.. Cancer is a terrible disease. It touches everyone eventually. |
1st Day I have read this thread...
Thoughts and prayers to you and your family. You sound like a very caring and loving Father...hang in there. |
Update on Kassidy.
We took Kassidy back to the DR on Thur (12th). Kassidy had been complaining that her left shoulder was very sore. The DR said they thought that was from her port-a-cath underneath her left arm and where she wasn't using her arm. The DR had a chest x-ray done. Kassidy had a collapsed lung. They put a tube in her chest on The 12th and today we finally came home.
She is feeling so much better, she is eating the way she used to. She came home today and has to go back Wed (25th) for more chemo . Kassidy has been added to the website www samefight.org This is the same site that I spoke about on my previous reply. Thanks again for your e-mails and just for listening. I'll update later |

We did get to come home for a very short visit I had to take Kass back to the Hospital late Thur because we could not control her pain in her RT knee(this is where her cancer is). yesterday the DR took x-rays and they drained lots of fliud off of her knee hoping for some relief as of this morning, it has not helped much. In the last month I think she has been home for less than a week. She is still scheduled to start chemo on the 25th.Thanks for the way these two posts where combined!!Thanks again for everything

Update On Kassidy
Hello everyone I hope everyone is having a good summer.
Its been over a month since I have updated on Kassidy, I apologize and I hope you guys have not forgotten about her. On my last update I talked about the pain she was having at her main tumor site on her right knee. The doctors here in Roanoke VA sent us to Kassidy's surgeon at the Medicial College of Virginia at VA Commonwealth University in Richmond. On May 1st the Dr did surgery to see if he could clean up and repair her tumor site. After many test and scans, they discovered that the tumor had taken over her knee causing alot of pain that was completely uncontrolable. On May 3rd Kassidy had surgery to have her right leg above her knee amputated. On May 5th in Richmond the Dr did Bone scans, MRI and a CT scan. Those test showed 5 spots on her lungs,1 spot on her right rib cage and on her left knee also.We came back to Roanoke Va . On May 14th thru May 19th,she received 5 days of chemo. On May 30th she started chemo again and will receive treatments for 5 straight days.We will have the same test run again to see if the chemo has effected the tumors any,the 1st time it did not. We are hoping and praying that it has stopped the cancer . I am asking you guys to keep Kassidy in your prayers and pray the test next week come back good.I had signed up to go to several camps over the summer, but basketball is on hold for now,my wife and I are spending every minute with her that we can, remember she is 12. I ask you guys to visit her web site at Kassidyspage.com and samefight.org Thanks and I'll update soon |

I can't imagine how you must be feeling, or her, but please know that you have been and will continue to be in my prayers. I wish I had a magic word to make it better but no such words exist. I am sure that there are plenty of people around you who would love to help you and support you all. I hope you will let them. Please, keep us posted on her condition. RR

I'm sorry to hear that Kassidy is still having trouble with the cancer. I know that the loss of a limb can be devastating to anyone, let alone a young girl with a gymnastics background. My prayers are with her. Please tell Kassidy that she doesn't need to wear the baseball cap as she is a beautiful little girl.
I know that you have placed your faith in God's plan. Although we don't always understand why He has placed such a burden on a little one's shoulders, Kassidy's brave fight is touching the lives of many people who have never met her. I'm sure that Dominique Dawes will remember her visit with Kassidy as fondly as Kassidy does herself. Please let Kassidy know that we are all pulling for her to get better real soon. |
Kassidys gone to heaven

It's not right to shed tears in front of everyone in the office. Very touching. I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine how your family feels. Best wishes.

It was a punch in the stomach to read the news this morning. I know that words cannot express comfort, but the Lord has sent the Comforter and I know that He is with you in your sorrow.
|
I'm so sorry to hear this news. I told my wife; she cried and we both hugged our own little girl that much harder. I hope that the many messages that were left on Kassidy's Page (and I left a couple) were of some comfort to her through her illness.
Your entire family is my thoughts tonight. |
