Your Shoes ??
I am just wondering what shoes everyone wears on the court to officiate. Personally, I bought 3 pair of the Converse All Star Whistle (patent leather) the last year they were made and am still in those. I have been looking at other options and wanted some ideas. Are there any other good option than the Reebok Ref or Spot Bilt patent leather shoes?? Thanks!

I have 2 different kinds of all black Addidas (1 mid top pair, 1 low pair) I found a couple of years ago. They are basketball shoes, similar to the Superstar model, but have some patent leather on them. They have been the most comfortable shoes I have found in my career. If anyone happens to know where these are still available, let me know. Mine are getting to be on their last legs. My partners wear the patent Reeboks and like them.

For my JuCo, BV, and high-octane GV games I wear New Balance 610's. I'm a big boy (6'5"/265lbs) and they provide me the cushion and bounce back I need plus they are confortable and keep a good shine (I don't wear patent leather sneaks)
For slower paced GV and my multiple game evenings (military intra-murals/rec leagues/AAU) I wear a pair of Reeboks I bought at JC Penneys a few years ago. They are comfortable on my feet for long periods. When I played basketball I was a Nike man and I wear Shox for jogging but Nikes I found to hurt my feet when I officiate. |

I wear my combat boots.

I wear New Balance shoes. I have 609's, and for my reserve pair - I forget what they are: but they're New Balance too. |

But on the shoes question...I wear The Ref Patent Leather. |
I'm fond of Spot-Built myself and currently am wearing patent leather ones. Those of you who seem to have an aversion to them: care to explain?

My second pair of OC Patent Leathers are starting to fall apart, so I'm going to pick up a pair of Spot-Bilt Patents over the holidays.
I wear the Spot-Bilts for football, and love them, so I can only assume they'll be just as good for basketball. |
The ones I'm using right now are from Official Footwear. I really like them so far. they're every bit as comfortable as the Nike Shox or Reebok patent ones I've used in the past. They come with a 7mm removable insole, which is great because I use custom orthotics & they slide right in.

I just bought a brand new pair of a brand new line, and they're great! I had New Balance before but couldn't get them wide enough, so I ended up getting them too long. I already have problems with clumsiness, and too-big shoes didn't help at all! These have the right kind of arch support, so I haven't added insoles. Now I'm fleet of foot, and light of spirit (well, at least on the basketball floor).
The new brand, which you should all watch for, is called RefShoe Great name, eh? They come in all sizes in regular width and all sizes in wides, either "matte" or patent leather. If you're interested, PM me and I"ll see if I can hook you up. |

OK you wear the Refs, but how many extra pairs do you have in your bags?:D Two? Three? |
Now that I'm through harassing Tanner :p I wear Nike Monarchs. They aren't the prettest shoe in the world but they are really comfortable. The Monarch IIIs are supposed to be more comfortable than the IIs. I have both, but won't break out the IIIs until it's time to retire the IIs. If and when I do change, I'll go to New Balance 610s or higher.

anyone know where i can get a size 16 shoes?? thanks!

I switch back and forth between Nike Air Max Solas and Adidas A3.
Was never much of a Nike fan, but I love this shoe. |

I'd start with Eastbay. |
I just got a pair of Adidas a3 microride leather. I love this shoe! With a history of foot problems (plantar fascitis) you have to go with what works for you.

I've got a pair of New Balance 609's with Spenco inserts. They are very comfortable, shine up pretty well, and come in wide sizes. Best of all, they come in various colors. So I was able to go into Mervyns, try on some white 609's until I found the size I wanted, then order them in black from Honigs. :)

I have two pairs of reffing shoes. My newer pair is the New Balance 381, although I found out recently that I can't wear them with ankle socks (they cut into my ankle and form a pretty nasty blister).
I also have a pair of all-black Nike Air sneakers. A few years old, but they still feel really good. |
I have two pair of the Reebok Patent Leather All-Stars (I love these shoes the most but they do not make them anymore. I do not wear them as often for this reason).
I have a pair of Patent Leather Spot-Bilts (I do really like these shoes). I have a pair of Nike Overplay shoes (I have noticed some problems with my Achilles tendon when wearing these shoes. I do not feel they give enough support). I also have a pair of Nike shoes in which I do not know the name of (They are OK but I do not like the over all look). I have a pair of the newer Reebok Patent Leather (I do not like them at all. They do not give enough ankle support for my tastes). I am looking for a non-Patent Leather shoe that I can wear more often or during college contests. Peace |
I wear black Nike Kobe Ones and Air Max Elites I customized on Nike ID. I like Nikes, but I guess I also have a problem with a little vanity; I think most Reeboks, New Balance and patentl leather shoes are ugly although the NB 610s look OK. I also like the way high tops allow my pants to fall over my shoes correctly. There is no way I would wear any low tops that have that little thing on the back. It might be useful for putting the shoes on, but it causes the pants to hang up and it doesn't look good. What can I say, I also get my buttons on my pants changed to black. :D

A few years ago when I was still in the military I did the same thing but luckily I had my own Bates. For those who don't know, Bates makes rubber-soled combat boots that are gym floor safe Quote:

New Balance 621's.
And for what it's worth, patent leather sneakers are just wrong! I don't know who first thought of them but if you want to wear shiny shoes, be a cop. |

Try the New Balance 610 High Gloss. Nice shoe, looks good, great support. It has a nice shine, not a patent shine. I have worn New Balance for the last 6 years. Buy one new pair every year and work them in with last years pair. They seem to hold up well. I do about 70 games a season.

I still have my Conversve patent leathers that still look good after about 5 years. Since they still look good, I keep wearing them, but I beef them up with Dr.Scholls about every other mouth. I even blew the ball of the shoe out in a camp and Dr.Scholls pads corrected that. This is my everyday regular varsity contest shoe.
For the bigger games, I have the Officials Choice shoe which they don't make anymore. This by far is the best looking referee shoe I've ever seen and it has the comfort I love because it's a mid-top. I only break these out for special occassions. I have had them for 2 years now and they still look new. What a shame they dropped this product. I have a pair of regular New Balance I purchased several years ago for my less than varsity assignments. I fix them up with Leather Luster and they take a nice shine. They are comfortable but my feet hurt afterwards and I'm not sure if that's the shoe or the fact of running so many games in a row. Try to purchase your patent leather shoes in the summer, the price is cheaper than. I got both my patent leather shoes for haft price, $30.00 when I bought them and I absouletly love them. Maybe it's just because of what I paid for them.... |

I also have several pairs of shoes to ref in and I try to keep rotating them. For a long time I have been telling ref buddies that guys wear their shoes way to long. Since our shoes are only worn on the gym floor, they don't show the kind of wear like our everyday tennis shoes so people keep wearing them even though the midsole and support are gone. Back when I had 1 main pair I wore at a time, I would replace them about every 50 games (I did this for the health of my feet, knees and hips).
Currently I am rotating several pairs of Nike Shox all black running shoes. I know some guys would never wear running shoes to ref, because they want more lateral support, but I try to stay away from jab steps ;) and any other tricky moves :p |

Last, most of you probably already know this but for some that may not. Do not take a new pair of shoes (new brand) right out of the box and wear them. Wear them around the house a couple of days first to break them in before putting them to test. I have wrecked my feet many of times doing this. Just thought I would share.... Peace |

Reebok - DMX Max - has the air bladder in the base of the shoe which feels like your running on clouds.
