Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Chuck was Mr. Grammar Guy.

Typographical errors have nothing to do with grammar.

Personally, I don't think we need a Mr. Typographical Error Guy.

Who's Chuck?

I had some scrimmages/exhibition games, starting for real Thursday night.

NCAA rules, 2-man...

Had my first regulation games last night, military intramurals.

1st game the organization for which I work (defending base champions) lost a close game. They committed a stupid blunder in the last minute. Down by one they forced a turnover OOB in their backcourt. Then when I bounce the ball for the throw-in I notice 2 players are standing OOB. The player I bounced it to is not the brightest player in the world (I know this from my playing days with him) and I'm thinking "please don't do something stupid and force me to blow my whistle." But of course, he takes the ball and bounces it OOB to the other player standing next to him, so I whistle the violation and they end up losing by 1 pt.

2nd game was a blowout and pretty ugly.

In the 1st half of the 1st game I had to make 2 long distance calls from the trail: held ball on a blocked shot in the paint and an obvious hack across the arm on a transition play. At halftime my partner (NCAA-W: D1, D2, & D3) thanked me for coming to get the calls b/c she forgot we were doing 2-man and said she was waiting for the Slot Official to blow the whistle. :o

Got my 1st T out the way. Beautiful follow-up dunk of a horribly missed lay-up but dude decides he needs to slap the backboard while he is up there.

I did make a couple travel calls that I wish I could see some film on to see if I got them right. I also guessed :o once on a foul call (2nd game) in which a A1 went up for a dunk (jumped off 2 feet), missed, then ended up landing on his back. I didn't see a push, but called one on B1 who was directly behind A1 when A1 jumped. B1 didn't say a word nor even make a funny face after I blew the whistle so I think I guessed right. The game was a blow-out and very physical so I wanted to err on the side of caution.

I might have killed the play at that point and re-administered the throw in after quietly reminding A2 he's standing in the wrong place.

Good way to handle it.

2 person games you sometimes have to guess. It's part of the deal.

Well, after my initial "please don't do something stupid" thought, I thought about killing the play, but by the time I was finished thinking A1 had already committed the violation, so it was too late (I've noticed my reaction time is getting slower as I get older and 2 thoughts back-to-back seem to take a while to process). But it will cause me to be more alert on my throw-in administration for the rest of the season.

How can you say that a team that won by 84 didn't run the score up?
In any state that has a mercy rule, this game would have qualified. :(
What exactly is your definition of running up the score?

I\'m 4 games in. 2 JV college men\'s and 2 women\'s games. I think I\'m cursed in my women\'s games. Both have had a pretty bad injury and both were my call. The injured player was also the one that committed the foul in both cases. One ended with a split lip that bled all over and the other resulted in a concussion. Hopefully I can get through Saturday\'s game with everyone in one piece.

6th grade boys 29-3 at the half. That\'s running up the score!!

On the winning team, all the boys were taller than all the boys on the other team. All of them. literally.

All the winning players had several years experience, and there were only 8 of them, so they didn\'t have a third string.

Coach didn\'t pull his steal, fast break, lay up until after the half-time. And even then, score was 48-7 at the end. And that was with a very bad case of "the travels."

They really didn\'t gloat, though. And I noticed after the game that every one of the winning players made a point of talking to one of the losers and saying what a good shot, or what a good pass or what a good steal. They did it sincerely. So I forgave them for running up the score.

Had a Varsity Girls game recently where the winning team won by 66 points. The score was 40-4 at the end of the first period. The winning team played half court ZONE defense for the final three periods. Still held the losing team to ONE point in the 4th. Same school, different night, their 9th Girls beat a different school by 65 points with 7 minute quarters AND a running clock the entire second half!

AAU girls have been going for a while, but start the scholastic stuff tonight with a ms game. Here we go.....
