Speaking only for what I've observed with the MI HSAA, if you play HS ball as a 7th or 8th grader, the school has to receive permission for it on an annual basis, and your HS eligibility doesn't start until 9th grade.

There was a girl a few years back who set a scoring record, and it was footnoted with the comment that her 8th grade season (as a varsity HS player) was not included.
