I think you handled this all right.

My minor quibble was that, in the original situation, rather than "hold the ball," I tend to shout "Easy! Easy!" or "Stop at the whistle!" I think both more accurately portray what you meant than "hold the ball." She was holding the ball, right?

I would be certain to get my name cleared...wouldn't let someone lying about my conduct slide. And I mean that, dammit. ;)
