Four elements are needed for a backcourt violation call:

1) Front court status (the ball) - Present
2) Team control - Missing
3) Last to touch (in frontcourt) - Present
4) First to touch (in backcourt) - Present

As Zebra indicated, there is one element missing that is needed for a b/c violation call...there is no team control on a try / shot. Sorry, Just Another Ref, possession is not a factor...nit-picky, I know. Good post...
