Gentlemen,
Had the following happen in a game last night & am looking for clarification on my understanding of the rules regarding a backcourt violation - NFHS rules. A had the ball in the frontcourt and attempted a shot. The shot was short and hit the net, but no other part of the basket. In the ensuing scramble for the ball, one of the A players batted the ball and it went into A's backcourt. Another A team player went into the backcourt and retrieved the ball and was whistled for a backcourt violation as soon as he grabbed the ball. My understanding is that there can only be a backcourt violation when it is preceded by team control in the frontcourt. Since A relinquished team control with the shot attempt and never regained control in the frontcourt, it seems to me that this was not a backcourt violation. Am I missing something, or was this call erroneous? Thanks. JM |

The way I read your explanation of the play the official was wrong. Batting a loose ball after a shot does not constitute team control.
