NFHS rules. Haven't had this happen but came close at the end of regulation in a tied Boy's varsity game. A1 inbounding ball from baseline, trying to go length of the floor with 2.1 secs left. Throws baseball pass about 3/4 court where ball is tipped. Shot goes up misses and game goes to overtime. No big deal, except that the ball got within an inch or 2 of the ceiling and very easily could have hit the ceiling in flight.

My question is what is the ruling in the case where the ball hits the ceiling? My first feeling was that the ball is OOB and Team B gets ball for throw-in at spot of Team A's original Throw-in. But I got to thinking about that and started to second guess myself. Just looking for clarification and maybe a rules ref. Again NFHS rules.

The went OOB when it hit the ceiling. Since it was legally touched IB, throw-in from the spot closest to the spot where the ball hit he ceiling.

If the throw-in hits the ceiling, it's a throw-in violation -- B's ball at the spot of the original throw-in.

If the shot (or a pass from an inbounds player) hit's the ceiling, the throw-in is at the spot nearest where the ball hit the ceiling.

Talking

I just got this vision of a player up in the rafters of the ceiling inbounding the ball because that was the "nearest spot."

It's worth taking a look around, pre-game, for ropes, cables, etc. drooping down from ceilings. High, arcing passes can easily hit them, and, if you haven't noticed that they're there, you may not catch it . . .

Sort of reminds me of the story about Arnold Palmer hitting it into the ocean at Pebble Beach 18th. Supposedly the TV announcer said his nearest legal drop would be Hawaii.

Does that player count towards the five on the floor?

The rule reference is 7-1-2-d.

Art. 2...The ball is out of bounds when it touches:

d. The ceiling, overhead equipment or supports.
