I had a player ask me this the other day.

When inbounding the ball, can you legally just shoot the ball without someone on the court touching it first? I thought "No, because the clock doesn't start until the ball is touched by the pass receiver inbounds."

However, there's a running clock in this league, so the clock continues to run even when a ball is taken out of bounds. My guess is still that you must pass the ball to a player inbounds and then she can shoot, right?

9-2-7 Throw-in Provisions : Art. 7 - "A player shall not throw the ball so it enters the basket before it touches or is touched by another player."

Thanks Mick! You're great!

So, technically, she could throw the ball off another player's head and it could ricochet into the basket and that would count. (Not that there's any great likelihood of this happening.)

The clock isn't relevant here. People score all the time with the clock stopped. It's a throwin violation, however, as Mick points out so briefly.

Hooper, she could also throw up an alley-oop, but if it goes into the basket untouched, it's a violation. May not happen so often in girls ball, but sometimes in men's league.

What if player A1 throws the ball toward the basket and it's over the cylindar and player A2 dunks it or tips it in. Is this a valid play?

Basket Interference!

Basket Interference?

How can you interfere on a ball that has not met the legal definition of a shot? If that were true, if a defensive player touched it on it's downward arc, it would goaltending. I don't think so(but i'm not an expert either).

A "try" is not needed to have BI. A "try" is needed to have GT.

Apparently it must be true. It's in the rules book. :)

See NFHS case book play 9.11.2SitC. It's the exact play. The NCAA rule is the same.

Also in NCAA:

A1 has a throw in from designated spot one step above the endline on the sideline in front court and passes the ball over the rim to A2 standing in the same position on the opposite side of the court. B1 makes contact with the ball above the cylinder. Basket interference, basket is good!!
