PPOE this year: Keeping track of the statistics, handling coaches.

So far: Only one game where I completely lost count of fouls and had to be told to give a 1-and-1. No players fouled out, that I didn't already know about. No surprise last second shots.

Several games where coaches were quiet and polite throughout. Several games where coaches needed to vent a little, but stayed well within the limits. One T on an a*** coach, One T on a head coach (both from same team, but two different games).

Until tonight.

Ugh.

Two games, three hours, one coach tossed, one T'd. I know it's not my fault. It really wasn't my fault. Partner was quick to point out all the crap we'd been dealing with all night. But I still feel like a failure. Oh, well. I guess that's life. I'm done for the season now, right?

And the statistics-awareness tonight was terrific!

Think of tonight as a statistical anomoly :)

"handling coaches" includes giving Ts when needed.

I was thinking the same thing. Just because you Teed someone or ejected someone doesn't mean you didn't do a good job at handling the coaches.

As you already know, most coaches who are asses make it a habit. Many are given much more leeway than they deserve, so you've actually done a favor for the coach (taught him/her her how to participate in the game... or not) and also done a favor for the next referee who gets this coach(who might not get quite as much garbage from the coach with the thoughts of being T'd or tossed in the last game).

Good for you for keeping things under control!

I know this intellectually. But it still doesn't feel good emotionally.

I also know that in the second game, where the coach got one and then shut up, her girls did the classic settle-down thing, and the T made the game better. That one I feel great about. It's just the ejection that bugs me. I'll get over it.

I've never left a game regretting giving a coach a T, I have regretted NOT giving one.

Come on, Juulie, you know you're a good referee. Most of the time when I've left the floor feeling like you are, it had much more to do with being tired, stressed, or what was going on in my life away from the court and not the game itself. And let's face it - some nights we feel like Superman during a game and some nights we feel like Goober Pyle. Most of the time we are in the dead center of the two. I'll bet you handled the game well -- better than you are giving yourself credit for.

2) Going solo in a Boys JV ... check
3) My Co Official "squares up" to a coach after a game ...check
4) State association paperwork .... check
5) Fan ejection ... check
6) 2 games today - 2 OT's ... check

Juulie, I had a hard game last year (I think I even posted about it) that I came away from just feeling lousy about. In retrospect what I learned from that game is that sometimes that lousy feeling comes because somebody else makes the situation impossible to handle any other way. In my game it was calling a lot of fouls, including a T, late in a blowout against the losing team. In your case it was tossing a coach. In both cases we did a good job, we did the right thing, and it feels icky because somebody else screwed up.

So let go of the lousy feeling and move on. But you can harbor some resentment for the coach 'cause she loused up the streak you had going. :)
