I've learned some good lines here for dealing with chippy coaches, and I came up with one yesterday when they were trying to outdo each other asking for calls. At least I think it's original. (Addressing both coaches), "OK, I wanted to be a coach when I was growing up, and apparently you wanted to be referees. But it just wasn't meant to be. So if you will please focus on COACHING, I will focus on REFFING."

I think it is funny.

Delivered at the right time that might just work.

:D

Peace

IMO, the "you coach/I ref" or any variation of it is on about the same level of aggravating replys as when a coach says "call it both ways".

What you say may be true in general, but if this works for someone, they should use it. I can see it being helpful sometimes.

Whatever works for someone is what they should use, it still doesn't change my opinion. There is plenty of other less adversarial comments that will get the point across.

Such as...?

"Coach, pick your spots"
"Not on every call, Coach"
"I saw it/ it was clean/ he kept his foot down/ he slid under/ stuck his knee out/ by rule....." or whatever fits.

I'm just saying that the "you coach, I ref" line is oftentimes not going to help matters.

I'm not really a ref, but I DID stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Say it with me:

"There are plenty . . ."

"Subject-verb agreement is my friend."

It seems that maybe I could get some extra credit for taking extra time to spell adversarial correct. ;)

Maybe, but you just lost it for using "correct" incorrectly.
