I've learned some good lines here for dealing with chippy coaches, and I came up with one yesterday when they were trying to outdo each other asking for calls. At least I think it's original. (Addressing both coaches), "OK, I wanted to be a coach when I was growing up, and apparently you wanted to be referees. But it just wasn't meant to be. So if you will please focus on COACHING, I will focus on REFFING."

IMO, the "you coach/I ref" or any variation of it is on about the same level of aggravating replys as when a coach says "call it both ways".

What you say may be true in general, but if this works for someone, they should use it. I can see it being helpful sometimes.

Whatever works for someone is what they should use, it still doesn't change my opinion. There is plenty of other less adversarial comments that will get the point across.

Such as...?

"Coach, pick your spots"
"Not on every call, Coach"
"I saw it/ it was clean/ he kept his foot down/ he slid under/ stuck his knee out/ by rule....." or whatever fits.

I'm just saying that the "you coach, I ref" line is oftentimes not going to help matters.

Had a coach ask me to watch something at the other end of the floor. we were less than a minute from half time and the foul count was 4-3. I replied that I would watch for that in the next half.
