A1 commits his 5th foul. Official notifies coach, starts 30 second timer, tells A1 it's his 5th foul. A1 sits on the bench with 20 seconds left on the timer. Does the coach have to immediately put his sub in or does the coach still have the rest of the 20 seconds.

The coach has 30 seconds to get a sub to the table. Once the sub is at the table, play resumes immediately. But he can use all 30 seconds to get the sub to the table.

So A1 can go sit on the bench and the coach still has the remainder of the time to send the sub to the table?

Unless you want to be a hard-*** and T A1 for leaving the court when s/he's still a player. I wouldn't recommend it.

Sure. Why not? I'm not sure I understand why it's a problem for A1 to be on the bench.

Once the coach has been notified, he's officially DQ'd, is he still a player? I would've thought he'd immediately be considered bench personnel, right? B/c if we T him, the coach gets the indirect. So he can't be a player, right? Am I forgetting something?

Nope, you weren't. My guess is that Bob hasn't had his first cup of java this AM.
