Watched the 2nd ranked Class A team in Illinois tonight in the finals of the holiday tournament. They go 6'8", 6'5", 6'4 across the frontline. At half time all three are dunking prior to the official's coming back on the floor. Hypothetical question, this tournament has a closed circuit camera that broadcast on a screen in the concession area. If the officials happen to see the dunking as they walk by the t.v could they call a technical? There jurisidication doesn't start until they arrive at courtside correct? So I am assuming the answer would be no. But it would serve them right to get caught.

Since the officials' jurisdiction doesn't start until they are on the floor, it's not a foul until that time. So even if they were to see it on the closed circuit TV, there'd be nothing to call.

Hell if that were the case schools would have CCTVs in the locker rooms and we wouldnt show up until it was time to throw the ball, no need for jackets. We'd almost be like the MLB. Show up for game time. Quick meet/greet with coaches and go on about the game. Boy wouldnt that be nice?

However, the post states that this occurs during halftime. Therefore, the officials do have jurisdiction.

The officials jurisdiction extends through halftime. The requirement of when they take the floor is for prior to the game and they are required to be there at least 15 minutes before the scheduled tip-off. However, there is a definite rule which protects the kids from technical fouls in this case.


SECTION 2 OFFICIALS' JURISDICTION
ART. 1 . . . The officials shall make decisions for infractions of the rules committed within or outside the boundary lines. <font color = red>The use of any replay or television monitoring equipment by the officials in making any decision relating to the game is prohibited.</font>

Put speakers on the backboards. "This is your lead official speaking, 'OK guys, shooting 2.'"

Have a camera in the lockerroom so we can signal the fouls. TV monitors at the table. We get paid by e-check.

Heck, we could do it at home via the computer.

Why weren't the officials back on the court before half-time warmups?

According to 109g in the officials manual the officials return to the court approximately three minutes before the halftime intermission ends. Anything the teams do prior to that isn't going to be observed.

Good point, Nevada. It was a lead in question. So pregame with coaches...request that they do not start warmups before 3 minutes to go before 2nd half. Make sure table hits horn at 3 minutes to go or better still request home admin person to knock on your door.

I agree with you JR that we don't have the right/power to TELL them and there isn't any rule to back us up. That is why I said REQUEST. If coach is adamant against your REQUEST, explain the problem. It's OK to practice your SHOOTING, but it is against rules to practice DUNKING. What the heck, it's worth a try. Most coaches may not have a problem with your request. Our association stresses how well we deal with coaches and we have scored very high in this area. It has made our job of officiating easier.
