I was watching BYU thrash Eastern Washington (a non-conference game) on Tuesday night and noticed something curious. The officials appeared to be pointing at the dribbler's pivot foot on plays where it "looked like a travel." I noticed it twice on no-calls and once on a called travel. I have not seen this before. Is it a new mechanic being tried?

Ray,

It is not a mechanic, but some refs do it to indicate that they see the pivot foot. I'm sure that there are many here who will think it is unnecessary (I don't do it, but you know that), but I think it is just a "communicator" for the coach to let them know that it was seen. Have a happy new year.

PS--I'm at SLCC tonight and tomorrow night. 7:30 tip off each night.
