This became a major debate issue at our last org meeting. Player comes in from out of bounds and established 1. one foot before catching the ball 2. two feet before catching the ball. Which is a violation? Our old school refs laid claim to two feet and could not be convinced otherwise. The new school refs say one foot (with reference to 4.35.2 in the NFHS case book). I brought this up at my last game to my partner to establish how we'd call it and he thought I was nuts...its TWO feet (old school....). Is it one, or two? Or, is this a paper or plastic issue: Either works, just decide which to use?

All you need to do is touch the inbounds part of the court, you are considered inbounds. So the last place you touched on the floor is where you are considered to be (airborne player). As long as one foot is completely inbounds, that is all you need.

lmeadski,
With regards to being inbounds or being outa bounds, the rules do not differentiate between one foot or more feet. A player is where the player is until that player is somewhere else. And, the player is somewhere else when that player is touching somewhere else. Yes, 4.35.2c says it simply. Don't over-think this thing, just keep it simple. There is nothing tricky here. ;) mick |
I have it clear in my mind...
Its our varsity/experienced refs in our local association with hundreds of years experience that cling to the two feet rule. I even cited rhyme and verse to no avail. Just wanted to hear what you all had to say on the matter. I feel vindicated...sort of.

In football, if a player is not touching OOB, he's not OOB. He doesn't even have to be touching inbounds. If he's OOB and jumps, he's inbounds while he's airborne. |
