Does anyone have any secrets To Share With A fellow official, when players only have numbers on the back of there tee shirts and when you make a call you have problems picking up the numbers. Even in your pre-game you discuss this with your partner and he/she is no help! /

It's not allways that simple to tell the kids to just turn around so you can check the number(s) on there backs. Most of the time the players know you want to know there numbers,so they wait until you make the call and see you looking for the numbers and then they act like they are questioning the call so that the official has to circle them to get the number.Maybe this should warrant a delay of game warning.

Really not that difficult an issue.
Take your time. I am sure you are talking about summer basketball because I believe it is illegal to have these type of jerseys during the regular season. But simply do not report the foul, or leave the scene until you know the players number. And if the clock is running or constantly moving, still do not be in a hurry. I would rather take my time then, then be in a hurry and report the wrong player's number and cause further conflict.
It should be that simple.

If they refuse, give them a T. It's not that hard. |

Sometimes
Depending on the league, yes. And if there is a camp associated with the league, you might have to report the fouls whether they count or not.

I do lots of summer league where there sometimes are no numbers at all and you have to ask their name! In fact, in one game last weekend, one team had three guys with no numbers. We called them redhead zero, short zero and tall zero.
Usually, players will turn around immediately when asked. If they don't - try this: walk over to the coach and tell him the player won't give you his number, so you'll be asking the coach for the numbers on every foul. Believe me - he'll get his players to cooperate. BTW - you said your partner wasn't any help. What DID he do when he needed a number? |

I had a game this weekend where the jerseys "hadn't arrived yet." I said, "Okay, you girls aren't allowed to foul until your jerseys get here" -- and they didn't!!! |

at the fouler while reporting ("this guy here, no not him, the other one, yeah he's the one, I don't have his number, do you know who he is?") or things like that to just stop the game until the guy is identified. Or just ask an opponent, they are always willng to give the kid up! |
