Need some help. Our association was having a discussion about this situation tonight at our meeting. Say there is a shot right at the end of a quarter, half or end of game. The person shooting gets fouled and time runs out on clock. The coach of the fouling team then goes berzerk and gets assesed a techical. When do you shoot the shots for the technical? Some of us say you start the new period off by shooting the free throws for the technical while others say you shoot them right after the shots for the foul. Which way is correct?

In your situation, the technical foul FTs are part of THAT quarter NOT the next one because the quarter doesn't end until all related activity is over. That activity in your scenario is the administration of the 2FTs for the personal foul.

Here's the rule citation:

Rule 5, Section 6, ART. 3 . . .

If a foul occurs:

a. So near the expiration of time that the timer cannot get the clock stopped before time expires.
b. After time expires, but while the ball is in flight during a try or tap for field goal.

The quarter or extra period ends when the free throw(s) and all related activity have been completed. No penalty or part of a penalty carries over from one quarter or extra period to the next.

Agreed. Since the quarter doesn't end until the FTs are shot for the shooting foul on B, the T occurs during the quarter. Shoot the personal foul FTs, then the technical foul FTs. Start the next quarter with the AP arrow.

You will shoot the FT's they are part of the period. The T is a dead ball foul and you will start the next period shooting two FT's for the T. If you would look in your casebook. Sit: 5.6A And 5.6B you will find your examples.

03/04 Case Book

5.6-B If a T occurs after the ball has become dead to end a Q, the next Q is started by free throws.

I will have to go find my books but the T here does not happen after the ball become dead to end the quarter.

I agree with Nevada, end the quarter with the T's and start with AP in the next quarter

Truerookie and Larks,
You are invoking the wrong rule for this situation. The rule which you are attempting to apply is the next article following the one I cited in my post above.

You are trying to use:
Rule 5, Section 6,
ART. 4 . . . If a technical foul occurs after the ball has become dead to end a quarter or extra period, the next quarter or extra period is started by administering the free throws.

You cannot use article 4 here because the ball does not become dead to end the quarter until the final FT for the personal foul ends. Since the coach got the technical foul prior to that, you need to apply article 3 as I quoted above. It is a fine line, but timing is everything in this case.

Better ask Santa for an up-to-date case book for Christmas. If you've been a good little boy, you might get one.
