JV-G, 3rd game of season

During a live ball, player is tying a shoe. Visiting coach yells "call time, ref, she's tying her shoe". I say "you want a time out?" He says, "no, you've gotta stop play". I say "no, I don't". He says "that's a safety issue".

During the next time out he complains that he's had it three times and the refs have called it. His school is in a different Board district, so maybe they do out there but I've never seen it called nor have I called it in anything but maybe 2nd and 3rd grade Rec ball.

What do you do?

I did ask in pregame if all equipment was correct. Obviously he needs to work in practice on securing clothes/uniforms. Maybe he should focus on putting the ball in the basket also because his team was on the short end of a 57-9 final score. But what do I know, I'm just a ref not a coach.

if its a dead ball

i will give the player time to tie his shoe before putting the ball in play -- also if his team has the ball and they are just walking the ball up the court i will stop and let him tie his shoe -- i do this only once a game where i would stop the action any subsequent time i just let it play until a dead ball or if the coach insists i must stop the game to let his player tie his shoe -- blow the whistle and call a timeout for his team -- coach will complain and then you tell him "coach i am going to go and report something to the table that starts with a letter T which one do you want?"

happened twice and both times the coach went with the timeout.

maybe he should get some bow-biters for his players.

Suggest to the coach that his players double-knot their shoes. Don't stop play.

What a crock. I've heard that too.

Only time I'll stop a live ball for something related is (happened once) eye-glass's knocked off in the post.

The coach has time outs, substitutions and dead ball opportunity. not the referee's problem. There are 9 other players playing.

Tell the coach that the player can tie his/her shoe out of bounds. When the player steps out of bounds, blow your whistle, signal the violation and allow the player to tie the shoe.

A JV coach said this? Unbelievable! That's the thinking of a 5/6 grade coach.

Wow. There's actually a website devoted to this?

Obviously the creator of the site has had too many donuts in his/her lifetime.

That's why I haven't created such a site; I haven't had enough donuts.

No you silly goose. Here's how it works:

A1 emails A2 to thank him for bringing in the donuts on a particular morning (for argument's sake let's say this morning). Then, quick as a bunny you drive to the airport and fly to where said donuts are located.

Plus or minus a 200 mile drive in your rent-a-car you have hot coffee and fresh donuts...or cold coffee and old donuts, depending on what airport you fly out of.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention all bets are off if said donuts slide down a snowy 70' cliff...but sh!t, when does THAT happen??

John Wooden's first basketball lesson to his teams was Shoe-tying 101. Anyone who's shoe comes untied during the game comes out.

Lesson number 2...

Wear the best clothes your hush-hush money will buy you, then Wooden would look the other way.

"I see nothing, I hear nothing."

An alert player would say "Shoe's untied" next time down the court. ;)
