when a player dribbling the ball slides their hand under the basketball while dribbling, most officials will signal an over and back hand gesture and call it "carrying." another official told me there is no such thing as a carry, but actually it is a traveling call, since the player is technically stopping their dribble while they continue to run down court. it looks stupid to call travel since the player is dribbling even though technically they are stopping momentum of the basketball. should i signal travel, or continue with the carried signal? hope you guys understand what i am talking about, and tell me what you think.

quote: Tell your friend that he's still living in the dark ages. The carry (palming) signal was put back in due to popular request. Check out signal #17 in the 99-00 rule book. BTW - even though the rule book describes a "double dribble", since the mechanic says it's an "illegal dribble", my association calls it that way. I know that logic is just the opposite of my first comment, but that's basketball. If you want justice, call Judge Judy. |

I always agrue that in essence a travel, illegal dribble (double dribble) and a carry are esntially the same violation just at difference times. The dribble has stopped and started over. But I would advise you indicate what it really is. In other words don't signal travell when everyone in the gym including your blind grandma knew it was a carry.

National Federation did do away with the "palming the ball" call 2 or 3 years ago and made that call a travel or a double dribble. This only lasted 1 year...The "palming the ball" signal was back in force the next year.
Tell your partner to read his/her rulebook and attend a clinic more than every 5 years or so!! |

While the signal used should be the carry
signal as others have indicated I still would like to see it called what it really is which is a double dribble. As long as the rule book says it is a carry that is what we should be doing. |

quote: I think what we might have been finding were a lot of confused coaches/fans when we were calling that an illegal dribble, because in their minds they're thinking: "Double dribble? He never stopped dribbling." So some officials (I'm guilty of this) were signalling the illegal dribble, then selling/explaining it by following it with the carry signal. Personally, I'm happy to have the carry back.... ------------------ Brian Johnson |
