I was a contracted Official for a boy High School Varsity Basketball scrimmage. Is there any rules that apply to the conduct of coach during a scrimmage? Can he/she act like they want toward the Referee? What can and should the Referee do during a scrimmage when you have a coach who acts with unsporting like conduct?

A scrimmage is practice for the season, so why would different rules apply?
For me it comes down to giving the warning or T versus telling the coach that during the season that gets them a warning or a T. I've never been put in that position though, so I'm not sure how I'd handle it. 99.9% of scrimmages I've ever done the coaches were much more focused on what their players were doing, or not doing, to even worry about what we are calling. Usually you will get a few, "What did they do?" But even that is more for them to correct the action than complain about the call. The relaxed nature allows for better interaction between officials and coaches and I've found that it carries over into the season, because they have dealt with you as a person and not just a uniform with a name attached. |
