Girls' District tonight. I'm Trail, ball inbounded under A's basket, high pass, tipped by point guard in frontcourt, goes into backcourt. I head back and get even with ball as point guard picks up ball. TWEEEEET, Center blows backcourt violation.(Crap!) Coach A behind me, "She didn't have control! That's not over and back!" (Double crap, coach knows the rule). "That's wrong isn't it?" I feign deafness and move to new lead. New Trail prepares to inbound in front of A's bench, and answers Coach A's repeated question "Is that the right call?" with a "No". (Triple crap!) He then gave B the ball to inbound. Is this one we just have to "eat"? C made a big sell so I wonder if inadvertant whistle would be his option,(but he asked us at the half if it was the right call, so never mind). Is this a case for an overrule? I am sure C should not have told Coach it was wrong call, but here we go this way regardless. How do you folks deal with a missed ruling?

"Hold on a second coach, let me see what he has to say."

Then go over to your partner & discuss. Maybe he saw something you didn't, maybe he screwed the pooch. Fix it if he did.

Agreed. Go to your partner and point out that there was no team control before the ball went into the BC. Then, let him change the call.

Or you can take the position that if your partner is going to make this call from C when it is the T's call to make, and then not come over and ask for your help, then he can eat it on his own and take all the heat from the coach.

He's clearly not being a good partner to you, should you treat him the same way?

"No, coach. He made a the wrong call. Why don't you yell at him and see if he'll change it or give you a T?"

Sounds like a situation you may want to include in your next pre-game - what do we do if/when we have some hesitation?

Anytime you feel uncomfortable/not confident, check with your partners. This is one you could have briefly discussed and corrected the inadvertant whistle.

Always a tough one but better right late than wrong gone.

The rule I was taught in my first camp was, "If you're not sure, don't blow."

Wow, I bet you're a lot of fun to work with.

Come on, Tony. Have another cup of coffee. The comment is clearly tongue-in-cheek. The very next line is about baiting the coach into a T. He's just venting what he wishes he could do.

Sorry to hear that, zebra44.
Agreeing with others, there was enough time [with the change in direction and with the prolonged conversation with the coach] to fix that with a short chat.
Did it ultimately affect the outcome?

What kinda camp was that? [/B][/QUOTE]Hoop Mountain, way back in. . . '96? '97? Not sure. That was a big point. Every time you blow the whistle, you should be sure of what happened. No guesses. All your bad calls should be no-calls. But at least, every time you blow the whistle, you'll be right.

Some very good advise given here. The most important thing to understand is that your not right about every call all the time. This goes for rookies and vets. Open lines of communication are a must. You shoulda called over your partner, decided if possesion was established and then stuck with the call or reversed it. It definetly looked bad on your crew for the Trail official to say that his partener missed the call to the coach. If you decide not to confer with each other then maybe the appropriate response would be "I did not have the correct angle to make a call--Or I was screened away--He/She had a much better look at the play than I." Don't leave your buddy hanging out there the way your partener did.

Didn't affect the outcome of the game, Mick, but that and lot of other glitches affected my enjoyment of doing it. In retrospect I think I probably didn't want to embarrass the C....and also wasn't aware that I should have a go at an overturn. We had a good pregame, but when the game started (actually before the opening tip we had a glitch)it was like we had no pregame. As you Mick knows, Michigan has gone to three whistle crews at the district level, and guys who say they are relaxed with it are.....well........got in,got done, got out.

zebra44,
You appear to be relaxed doing it, but you are also the type that stays in the game and dead ball officiates, so you don't get caught in a pickle when the clock is ticking.
