#1 is a violation.... why? Did he bat it with two hands? When he batted it, was his hand under the ball? After he caught it with two hands, did he try to continue dribbling? #2. Legal play, right? Official is wrong?
Rule 4, under definition of dribble, you'll find something that looks like this:

A dribbler is allowed to bat the ball provided he allows it to strike the floor one or more times.

#2 Official is wrong.
