I just found a great way to stay in shape for basketball and avoid crappy summer leagues in the process:

Lacrosse.

I worked my first game last night and it was a blast. Positioning mechanics are similar to basketball and you get one hell of a workout. I think I ran more than three basketball games combined.

I felt a little clueless (full grasping of the rules will come), but I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun officiating a game. Can't beat the fresh air either.

Well, I've landed on my feet this summer with respect to summer leagues. By pure unadulterated luck, I found a spring league with some of the best varsity girls teams in the area, and they like me! I didn't get yelled at once in 5 games last Saturday. Furthermore, the assignor for this league has invited me into another summer league with similar guidelines, and a higher skill level. I'm feeling on top of the world!!

Wail until next year, hopefully some plumb contracts roll in.
