Hello All!
Just received my patches and Registered Official card. Can someone please answer a few questions for me?
1. What do I do next?
2. How do I get contacted to officiate BB games?
3. What is the pay?
4. Do I pursue the schools in my area or will they contact me?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Nupe, where are you located? Are you a member of an association? It will most likely set your course of action. Pay depends on the level. Your location will depend on whether you should solicit games.

I am in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Not a member of an association. Thanks for the quick response!

I would also suggest finding a local association to join. The members would be a valuable resource in answering many of your questions, especially as they pertain to your area. I would assume the Michigan H.S. Athletic Assoc. would be able to give you contacts on local associations; check their website.

Good luck!

Nupe Look up Rex Forsyth(sp). Huron Valley Officials Association.....You could also get onto the MHSAA website. Look for Approved associations and look for Huron Valley in there...www.mhsaa.com and Welcome. Don't be a stranger. Come back to this site often. There are some sharp guys/ladies on here that know their stuff. You will learn alot. It also helps to have your rules & case book handy. Many answers reference the books. Also, Aug 4th 6:30 pm at Pioneer H.S. is the MHSAA rules meeting in our area. Might be a good thing to attend. You can make some contacts there...Good luck....

Other advice

Besides all the other advice, also consider the following:

* Sometimes, posters (myself included) will find something funny in a post and make jokes. Try not to take it too personally

* Definitely come here with questions. The poster named Mick was (and might still be) a trainer with his association, so if you see him answering rules questions, you can usually trust what he shares here. He's a pretty decent guy, for a yooper .

* As the poster named that's a walk said, there are a number of seasoned officials who participate here who can help you get through your rookie season.

Good luck.

1. Study the rule book, case, and manual.
2. Contact them if you don't have an association near you.
3. The reward for doing something that you will love -- and the amount varies greatly between states and age levels.
4. Purse them. Make cards. Write letters. Introduce yourself -- and ask other officials for referrals. You'll probably get a lot of calls for lower level games. Enjoy them and learn all you can.
5. Always refer back to #1.
