what happens if a team doesn't have a coach on the bench?
does that team forfeit? or can the team captain act as coach? |
In order to answer your question, we'd have to have more specific information, such as:
1. What program - HS, college or rec 2. What state 3. etc. |
oophs...
NHSF rules in IL. sorry forgot to mention that. a friend asked me about that. i told him i would forfeit the game. but, after thinking about, i wasn't sure that is correct.

If it's during the season, end the game. Let others (copnference, state, etc.) rule on whether it's a forfeit. |
should have said...
during the season. in the summer i wouldn't worry about it. but, the original question was for during the season. so, we should end the game then. what if the team who was in the lead lost it's coaching staff. is it forfeited to the other team?

Not your decision,John. Don't forfeit. Just write "game "suspended" on the scoresheet, give the circumstances and put down how much time was left in the game. Whovever has the responsibility for that league then should make a decision. Go have a brownpop and don't worry about it. |
thanks...
so, we just suspend the game. that is interesting. thanks for the information.

If it's summer league and all the players are under 21, make sure there is an adult on the bench for the game. That person has to take responsibility for what happens if someone gets hurt. They, not you, should make any decisions in that area.
Please note this is not legal advice, but a rule we enforce in all the rec leagues around here. Ask game management what you should do in your case. |

Failure Only Happens When We Stop Trying!!! JohnBark: Now that you've received the advice you were after, I have to ask: if the two quotes from your signature line are to be adhered to, the result would be "Dare to Stop Trying"? |

I don't know the "right" answer for your rules but in FIBA the cpt is allowed to be a "playing coach" and he can also be replaced by another "playing coach" and so on
|
Imagine a world without coaches...........

BART: You're pathetic, Homer....you always tell me I can do whatever I want if I just put my mind to it. HOMER: Yeah, well now that you're older, I can tell you THAT'S A CROCK....no matter how good you are at something, there's always about a MILLION people better than you. BART: Got it. Can't win - don't try. :D |
How timely, I just had this come up a couple of weeks ago. A coach decided to get himself dismissed from a weekend tournament game (after the first T, he proceeded to tell my partner and I we were "friggin terrible and were friggin terrible the 3 times he had us). This was a early high school team (freshman or sophmores) so with no coach on the bench, I told them the game was over. Luckily someone's dad came and sat on the bench (quietly, thankfully) to finish the game. Had no one come forward, I would have talked to the site supervisor and probably called the game rather than play with no coach. First coach I've ever had to run and hopefully the last. As they say "when in Rome" (Can I use this here, even though it's an Anchorman reference?).

Had this happen to me last night in an 11U AAU national tournament. Coach got T'd...asst. coach gets a T...followed by another. Now we have 1 direct on coach, 2 direct on asst...making a total of three direct/indirect on coach. Both are escorted out of the venue...but we first tell coach to pick another adult or forfeit. He picks a dad out of the stands to complete the last 2 minutes of the game (fortunately the game was not that close, and the adult quietly completed his task after 6 free throws). Anyone know AAU prescribed procedure for this? I would have hated to have a team forfeit after traveling thousands of miles to a national tournament...and imagine the 11 year olds horror at watching this go on at their bench!

a. A team may have on its bench only the eligible persons listed on its official roster, including four (4) non-players (coaches, ball boy, scorekeeper, etc.). Only eligible players may wear uniforms on the bench. b. At least one person age 18 or older must be on the bench at all times. If as the result of a removal, illness, etc., no roster member of the minimum age of 18 available, tournament administrators shall select a person of suitable age to supervise the bench. |

And not at all yours? |
Yes, Dan_Ref, it should have been...but from the behavior I have witnessed this week, I wonder if ANYBODY has any concern for these kids...that includes the parents who entrust their sons to coaches like this (and there is no shortage of similar coaches in this tourney)...more appaling than any high school games I've done. And thanks for that rule clarification Jim.

This may take the cake from the "3 pregame dunks" scenario - basically a 2-for-1 ejection. |
Yes, Mark. Call it an Officials' Happy Hour...two ejections for the stress of one...and the sad part is they were all assessed within a period of approximately 45 seconds.
