Marc Hansen is a longtime writer for the Des Moines Register and is the author of this article. Hopefully not violating any rules here. This is also posted in baseball but I'm sure will sound very familiar to basketball officials as well.

You're right. Great article.

I think I'll print it out and mail it to a few coaches I can think of. (Just kidding...)

Thanks, I hadn't picked up the paper and seen that yet. I'm not usually a Hansen fan (in other words, I'm not a Hawkeye fan) but this was an interesting article.

Thumbs up

This is a really good article. Coaches like this guy ought to have to face the Spanish Inquisition - without the comfy chair !!!!

Good article.
----------------
11-year-old tournament and the coach can't let go. He makes a huge scene, spending the next several minutes telling the umpires how dumb they are.
----------------

Launch! See ya coach, that's all it would of taken for me.

No one expects the Spanish INQUISITIONNNNNNNN!!!

I have never understood the "I lost my mind" defense. This is freakin' amateur baseball, not a war. Officials just make calls, it isn't like the guy walked in on the umpire with his wife or anything. If I "lost my mind" every time a coach did or said something either a. stupid, or b. I didn't like, I would be in jail.

Kudos to the author for a great article.

Is "I lost my mind" supposed to be a good excuse? A justification? If one's mind is so easily lost, one should not be in a position to lead anyone, especially children!

A nice article, thanks.

And, congrats to the umpires for using common sense. Any jerks that try to win games or disdvantage the opponent (especially when we're talking about kids) with that kind of gamesmanship (whetner it's intentional or not) should be ashamed of themselves.
