I am aware that the possession arrow does not change until the free throw ends. So, if after a held ball with team A awarded the ball due to the arrow, team A is assessed a 5 second violation, The arrow would stay pointing towards A. Now if the same situation occurs except A passes the ball from, let's say the baseline, directly out of bounds on the sideline. This is a violation for not passing directly to the playing surface? Does the arrow stay with A in this situation? I left my book at home and I new I could depend on your help.

Wrong. The arrow changes when the throw-in (I assume that's what you meant by "free throw" ) ends *or* Team A violates.

So, in both the 5-second call and the "throwing the ball out of bounds" call, the arrow changes to B -- and they, of course, get the ball on the violation.

Bob, you assume correctly, I did mean throw in. I thought the chance to make an AP throw was forfieted if the throw in team violated or fouled. Again I don't have my book, but I think it's under "live ball dead ball"

You are correct that this situation is covered under Rule 6. However, NFHS 6-3-4,5 the direction of the possession arrow is reversed immediately after an alternating possession throw-in ends. An AP throw-in ends when the throw-in ends or when the throw-in team violates. The opportunity to make an AP throw-in is lost if the throw-in team violates. If either team fouls during an AP throw-in, it does not cause the throw-in team to lose the possession arrow.
