piston/76ers game...wallace shoots the ball defender makes him alter his shot...he steps in gets the ball before it hits the floor,rim or backboard...offical calls traveling...? is if this was deemed a shot towards the basket why was it called traveling...

NBA rules are NOT the same as NCAA and NFHS. It is a travel in the NBA.

If I recall correctly, then the rule is the same for FIBA as well.

NBA rule states:

"A player who attempts a field goal may not be the first to touch the ball if it fails to touch the backboard, basket ring or another player"
