Question

Hard foul on a Net player by Stacy Augmon, Lawerence Frank comes charging out to the center circle in anger and is dragged back by his assistants... Technical foul. That's his second (first earlier in the game), he's ejected.

Magic shoot and make the free-throw. While the free throws are being shot, Frank talks to one of the referees and somehow talks his way out of the technical. The officials converse and take away the technical foul, as well as the 1 point awarded for the free-throw. They've got a flagrant on Augmon so Nets get 2 shots and ball.

I know, I know, its the NBA... but on a relevant note, can a technical foul be taken back in high school ball? Correctable error?

Very odd.

I don't know what could've been said to have the T rescinded in that situation. However, I have worked a game in which my partner gave and then rescinded a T. Partner reports a foul and as he turns back to the court he hears a derogatory comment. He calls a T on the head coach.

Then everybody in the crowd behind the bench all start shouting. They're yelling that the coach didn't say anything, it was a kid behind the bench. So my partner says, no T.

Opposing coach informs me that he's finishing the game under protest. Uh-huh.

Not a pretty situation, but it happens.

From what I've sort of gathered from other online sources is that Frank claimed he was coming onto the floor to check on his player.

This happened in a Timberwolves game a couple of years ago. It was a "star" on the other team, I can't remember which one. He picked up his 2nd tech for taunting. The officials then realized he would be ejected, and all of the sudden took the T away. It was captured and replayed on audio and video quite a bit in the Twin Cities for a month or so. Not a good day for those officials.

A game this past season had a T called for a player slapping the backboard on a shot. Another official had an angle that showed the player got a piece of the ball before the backboard was hit. So, no basket, no technical AND the AP arrow for the inadvertant whistle gave the ball to the defending team.

What level was this? It's not a T to hit the backboard if you're trying to block a shot, even if you miss the ball altogether.

Likewise, it can still be a T for slapping the backboard if there is an attempt to block the shot....but the backboard contact is distinct from that attempt.

Slapping the backboard on a free-throw is a technical isn't it?

I think that would be a safe call.
