Is this considered double dribble?

Post player recieves pass in low post. Upon recieiving pass, he drop steps with foot closest to baseline. At the same time he does a (one) quick power dribble...hard, fast dribble with both hands, catching the ball after the one bounce. The power dribble is done in order to move the other foot into position to power the ball up to the hoop. Is this double dribble?

I was teaching low post moves to my team recently and a ref who was watching (his daughter was on the team) told me later he thought it was double dribble. I said that we'd been using the move for years and never been called for double dribble.

Thanks,
coachgrd

No, not double dribble nor any other dribbling violation.
As you described it, legal.

Additionally if you are a coach, I advise you to obtain a rule book and read it. Pay special attention to what is a travel, backcourt violation, double dribble, and legal guarding position.

Edit: Also tell your referee friend that he/she should review double dribble at the least and probably should review the rules in the list I gave you.

good move coach.

You are one of the better coaches on the board. I like how you present your questions. Keep up the good work.

Nothing unless he picks up his pivot foot BEFORE he releases the ball to start the dribble.

I see a lot of post players drop-hop-dribble on this move and that is a travel.
