I just finished reading "Calling The Shots" for the billionth time and thought I would share an anecdote.
There was an incident at a Mosque in Washington DC that put some focus on Kareem's religion. He received a death threat. While this in itself obviously is not funny, Strom and Jerry West (who was then the Laker coach) had this exchange before a Laker game. Strom: "You don't mind if whenever I have to hand Kareem the ball, I just kind of toss it to him from the sidelines, do you?" West: "You'll notice we haven't invited him into the huddles."

I read the book probably about ten years ago before I even thought of officiating. It was a great book, I loved it.
Hmm. Maybe it was his book that got me interested in officiating. I never went back that far. Hmm. It was a great book though. And that was quite a humourous bit. |

I too bought the book online inpart due to Mark's posts.
Great book and I found it for just a couple bucks plus shipping. Do a search (your favorite Google, Yahoo whatever) and you'll find several copies available. |

I just finished reading it also. One of my favorite parts: Wayne Embry coming down with a rebound and having his foot crash through the floor and get stuck there, only to have a "rookie" official call him for travelling when he finally yanks his foot free.

Just got a used copy in the mail....
Hmmm...it's in great shape, but it's also got a library dewey-decimal catalogue label on the spine, and a barcode with "Orange County Library System" on the cover. So if any officials in Orange County are having trouble checking the book out of their local library, give me a shout ![]() I hope it's not overdue.... |
