what does everybody think about the pretty recent fox 40 cmg's. I have not decided whether I like them or not yet because they start to fray after about a month of use with me, but I think they look good.

I contemplated getting the CMGs, but I ended up gettin a bunch of classics. I don't tihnk the CMG is all that nice, attracts dirt/dust during football season. :D

BktBallRef Tue Mar 22, 2005 12:05am

They aren't "recent." I've used them for several years. Wouldn't use anything else.

Don't use the same whistle every night and they won't fray on you. I rotate 2 or 3.

I tried one and didn't like it. It is too thick. It kept my jaw open an uncomfortable amount.

Oh man, I see some rather nasty jokes coming after that post.

For whatever reason, Fox made the CMG whistle bigger than the classic - it's wider by what looks like a fraction of an inch - and that's BEFORE they put the cushion grip on. I held the two side by side and the CMG is bigger.

If they'd just put a cushion grip on the regular size classic, it might be more comfortable to hold in your mouth....

Uh-oh, speaking of crude jokes coming on....

If someone Tee's it up and then asks you to hit it out of the park......naaa, I'm going to leave it alone.

FOX 40 Classic....all the way!

We've had this conversation before. Some guys swear by the CMG (Tony, for example). If you're not crazy about it, other guys have suggested using rubber pipe bits (Tanner) or wrapping the whistle with hockey tape (me). The thing I like about the tape is that I don't have to worry about it collecting germs. The tape comes off after each game.

I soak my whistle in moonshine after each game so it doesn't collect germs. That is if there is any left once I quench my thirst.

I've got several CMGs. They are ok, it is true they are bigger. Like Chuck said, I put a rubber pipe bit on my, it's not as thick as the CMG. I too rotate my whistles, one night it could be a Classic w/ pipe bit with the Smitty lanyard, a Classic with a Smitty Noose another night, or a Classic with the Smitty. Choices choices.... :)

I use the CMGs. I went to them I think two years ago and really like it. I tend to bite down when things get intense and have cracked a couple classics. The CMGs hold up for me. I rotate 2 or 3 and soak em in listerine over night a couple times a season.

Works well for me.

stmaryrams Tue Mar 22, 2005 09:42am

I am a big fan of the CMG especially after a collision with a player last year caused me to take a face first tumble to the floor.

Whistle never left my mouth.

where can i get these tips and hockey tape at because I really like the cmg but if i can put something on the regular classic so the tip will stay smaller than the cmg i would like to do so.

I'm not sure where Chuck gets his tape. Probably at a local store. However the pipe bits you should be able to get at a local pipe shop, or Honig's has them. They are located in their catalog (#PB) on page 2 under "Tip Guards".

If we could keep the discussions pertaining to issues we have on the floor and around the game of basketball please.
(Sorry - couldn't help myself)

I think what Chuck calls hockey tape the rest of the world might call plain old black electric tape.

No, no. I mean the stuff that ice hockey players wrap around the blade of their sticks. You get it at any sporting goods store that sells hockey equipment. Not electrical tape, too slippery. Yuck.

I think I speak for all of us when I say "Whew, I'm glad you settled that for us. We were all pretty worried" :D

I wasn't worried at all . . . until I realized he'd actually been contemplating it!

I'm finding a separate cabin at camp next August!

Not you in particular, it's just a general policy of mine.

I'm a long time CMG fan. Yes, they begin to "fray" a little after the first month, but that's good. It just helps them fit better. I have one I've used for four years and it's still my favorite. They do feel like having a 2x4 in your mouth at first, but they do wear down pretty quickly and feel good.

tjones1 Thu Mar 24, 2005 01:21am

Don't forget, the first CMGs they produced are different from the ones they are putting out now.

How so? I got my first one a couple of years ago. I've not noticed any fraying.

tjones1 Thu Mar 24, 2005 02:29pm

<s>Having trouble finding an old picture, however if you have a Honig's catalog, look on page 3 at the CMG.</s> (Edit: I found the older one) Here they are:

Older Fox40 CMG:

I wasn't saying the quality went down, I was just saying they got a little bigger.

drothamel Thu Mar 24, 2005 03:11pm

I am a big fan of the CMG because I chew the heck out of my whistles. The newer ones are much better than the older ones in their design. They do fray, and I highly recommend soaking them in Listerine over night every week or two cause once the cushioning starts to separate from the whistle, spit gets in there and it can get nasty. Plus, I always enjoy the taste of a minty fresh whistle!

refnrev Thu Mar 24, 2005 03:18pm

I didn't realize that they changed the size. I thought it was due to the fact that my other one was older and some of the cushioning had frayed. Still, I can't help but belive that night in and night out a CMG will still feel better than the hard plastic. Time will tell. I just ordered a Mini CMG to try for volleyball. I'm interested to see what it feels and sounds like.
